Sports Tape vs. Kinesiology Tape (K tape): What's the Difference?
Both sports tape and k tape are essential tools, but they do different things. Here’s are some of the key differences:
1. Purpose
Sports Tape: Used to provide support and restrict movement in injured joints or muscles. It's commonly applied to prevent further injury, especially in areas like ankles, wrists, or fingers.
K Tape: Designed to facilitate movement, reduce pain, and support muscles without restricting mobility. It aims to promote healing by lifting the skin, which improves blood flow and lymphatic drainage.
2. Flexibility
Sports Tape: Rigid and non-elastic. Its main function is to immobilise or limit movement to protect the injured area.
K Tape: Stretchy and flexible. This allows it to move with the body while still offering support.
3. Application
Sports Tape: Applied tightly, often requiring a professional to wrap it properly around the joint to ensure the desired stability.
K Tape: Typically easier to apply, even by the client themselves, and can be worn for several days without limiting range of motion.
4. Duration of Use
Sports Tape: Used during the activity and usually removed afterward. It’s not designed for prolonged wear.
K Tape: Can be worn for 3-5 days continuously, even through showers and workouts.
5. Appearance
Sports Tape: Generally comes in white or beige and has a more medical, traditional look.
K Tape: Available in various colors and patterns.
In summary, sports tape is your go-to for short-term, targeted support and stabilisation during activity, while kinesiology tape is ideal for ongoing muscle support and pain relief without sacrificing mobility. Choosing the right one depends on your injury, your needs, and the level of movement restriction required.
