Liberty Trophy:

Worcestershire Indoor Bowlers went out in the Second Round of the Liberty Trophy when they traveled to Wellingborough on Saturday [14th] to face a strong Norfolk team.

Worcestershire who had a number of late withdrawals showed great team spirit and held their own after 15 ends across the board with just 8 shots in the game 91 to 83. Norfolk though took control in the last part of the game to win 136 shots to 102 to go through to the Quarter-Finals.

Neil Smith won his Rink by 3 shots over Sam King. Mark Atkins led his team to a 2-shot success over former World Champion Mervyn King and Brian MacNamara managed a draw on his Rink against Ric Summers. Shaun Jones lost a 2 on the last end to lose by a single shot. Other losses suffered were by Chris Barton by 20 shots to James Segolo and Richard Moule by 18 shots to current England International Wayne Wilgress.

Worcestershire Indoor Bowling Association traveled to Avon Valley IBC in what was to be Ann Tees's first game as Senior Vice President. Worcestershire faced a very strong Warwickshire team and were unfortunately beaten comfortably 152 shots to 102. Peter Stokes, ably supported by Kenn Sutton, Geoff Tee, and Stuart Bond were the only rink to return a winning card on this occasion. Congratulations also go out to Jim Knowles, former President, who received his 150th game badge.

Worcestershire's next friendly match is on Sunday 24th November vs. Herefordshire at Leominster IBC.

Also, please note Worcestershire is now a unified County and all nominations are welcome.

Worcestershire bowlers had a record win in their Liberty Trophy game against Bedfordshire winning by a massive 80 shots at Bromsgrove. Leading the way was County President Mark Atkins losing only 3 ends for a 38-shot win. England international Shaun Jones skipped his rink to 30-shot win losing just 6 singles. Further wins were recorded by Neil Smith by 11 shots and John Cracknell and Richard Moule by 7 shots each.

Worcestershire will now play Norfolk on December 14th at Wellingborough in the next round.

Worcestershire Indoor Bowling Association will take on Bedfordshire in the Liberty Trophy 1st Round tomorrow starting at 10.00am at Bromsgrove & District Indoor Bowls Club.

There will be 4 new Liberty Trophy players making their debuts - John Cambridge, Dave Magness, Joe Peplow from Malvern and Jim Collins from Bromsgrove.

All spectators are welcome to come along and support the players.

Worcestershire County bowlers had a good start to their season when they defeated a combined Bromsgrove Ladies and Vice Presidents team at Bromsgrove by 61 shots overall.

Former County President Jim Knowles, ably supported by John Campbell, Geoff Smith, and Tony Keeling led the way with a massive 40 shots win over the Tony Carter [VP's rink] with Rick Sippitts also winning comfortably by 18 shots. Mike Cooper recorded a well-earned 12 shots win with Chris Jenkins winning a close match by 6 shots.

Losses were suffered by Ann Tee by 5 shots and by new debutant Bob Hanks who faced a formidable Ladies Rink skipped by former English Singles Winner Gill Cliff recovering from a large deficit to come back to lose by 10.

County Competition Update:

The Worcestershire Over 60's Pairs saw two Bromsgrove Pairings contest the Final with two-time winners Lew Whitehouse and Ray Kellard taking on Graham Arnold and Peter Bryan. The game was closely fought with the scores level at 4 all at 7 ends. Arnold and Bryan were 9-8 up 6 ends later. Arnold and Bryan then scored a crucial 3 and then a 2. Whitehouse and Kellard replying with a single on the 16th end which meant Arnold and Bryan wrapped up their victory with 2 singles to win 16-9.

In the last Worcestershire Indoor County Final, the pairs fixture with the experienced pairing of seven-time Winner Adie Burbridge and Chris Barton faced their Bromsgrove Club mates Brian Lees and Peter Bryan. The pairing of Lees and Bryan took control going up 14-0 at 7 ends. Burbridge and Barton fought back to score a 1 and 2 on the next 2 ends, however, Lees and Bryan scored a 4 on the next end for an early finish to the game.

County competition update:

Congratulations to the Malvern quartet of Martin Smith, Edric Vorsterman, Brian MacNamara and Marcus Smith who have won the EIBA National Over 60's Fours title. On Wednesday Martin Smith will be hoping for further success when he plays with Martin Griffiths in the Over 60's Pairs.

Also playing in the Over 60's Pairs is the Bromsgrove Pairing of Graham Arnold and Peter Bryan, fresh from their success in the Worcestershire Over 60's Pairs.

On Saturday sees Brian Macnamara play in the Over 60's Singles against England Outdoor Manager Martyn Sekjer. Tom and Mike Holmes play in the Family Pairs.

In the Worcestershire County Triples Final, the Bromsgrove trio of Peter Bryan, Brian Lees and Steve Morris started well winning the first 4 ends to go 6-0 up. Bromsgrove were playing against a Malvern triple skipped by young Harvey Griffiths with Neil and Marcus Smith, who replied scoring a 3 on the next end. However, the Bromsgrove triple seized control winning the next 6 ends to complete a commanding 17-3 lead. Malvern scored on the next end, but this wasn’t enough and Bromsgrove took the triples title.

In the Worcestershire County Indoor Singles Final Mark Atkins of Malvern played Brian Lees of Bromsgrove. Atkins, runner-up for the previous 2 seasons was in top form and with accurate drawing to the jack went 19-0 up. Lees bravely fought back scoring 2 singles, but Atkins scored on the next 2 ends to seal the victory 21-2.

Bromsgrove suffered disappointment losing to Plymouth by 24 shots at the semi-final stage of the Wessex League played yesterday at Rugby Thornfield.

Brian Lees returned the only winning card winning by 16 shots with Luke Lane managing a draw.

Defeats were suffered by Adrian Burbridge and Richard Moule both losing by 20 shots respectively.

Plymouth will now play Clarrie Dunbar in the final who won their game against Bournemouth 85 shots to 62.

Retaining a trophy is always a tough task, well done Bromsgrove on another excellent campaign.

County competition update:

The Worcestershire Under 25 Singles Final was played at Bromsgrove with Harvey Griffiths [15] of Malvern IBC taking on Matt Leedham [21] of Bromsgrove IBC.

In a sets match, Griffiths [who has just been selected by the EIBA for an Under 18 International trial] started well and won the first set 12-2 [7 ends]. In the Second Set Leedham scored a 2 on the first end, however, Griffiths took control again to go 8-2 up 3 ends later. Leedham battled back to score on 2 of the next 3 ends, however, Griffiths stayed on task and scored the single shot needed on the 8th end to secure victory 12 shots to 5 and the Trophy for the second year running.

County Competition Update:

In the Worcestershire Mixed Pairs Final Bromsgrove's Steve Morris, with substitute Kirsty Richards deputising for Helen Simmonds who was unable to play defeated the Malvern pairing of Mark Atkins and Julie Morgan.

The game was finely balanced at 2 shots each after 3 ends but then the Bromsgrove pairing took control winning the next 5 ends to take a commanding lead of 15 shots to 2.

Malvern won the next 4 ends to reduce the deficit to 15-7, however Bromsgrove enhanced there lead winning 4 of the next 5 ends to complete their victory by 22 shots to 8.
