Are you “too nice”? Do you feel as though people walk all over you and take you for granted? Do you struggle to stand up for yourself, avoid conflict, and people please habitually? Do you ever lie in bed and regret not saying something to someone who has upset, or offended you?

You can learn to assert yourself in a non-argumentative way, it just takes a bit of practice to break the old habits.

Emotional pain can cause depression, anxiety, sleep disturbances, anger, shame, and worthlessness... “Fake it till you make it” gets used, but more accurately, “what you resist, persists”.

Maybe you’ll be able to distract yourself for a while, but at some point, the source of your pain will come back when you least expect it. A photograph, a song, a smell, can transport you right back to feeling sick with sadness and anguish.

If you keep pretending you’re not hurt, how can you heal from it.

💔 With Valentine’s Day quickly approaching, missing someone can feel even more acute around this time of year.

Missing someone creates change in brain chemistry. Scientific studies indicate that your brain reacts significantly when you're missing someone you love. The oxytocin and dopamine that's released during a relationship suddenly stop flowing. You become chemically dependent on their presence to make you feel happy, similar to drug withdrawal, and this can cause reactive depression when absent.

Unfortunately, the only way to navigate this is by giving yourself the time to heal. Keep talking, but to people who don’t impart too much of their own opinion on what you’re going through, as this can cause you more distress.

Counselling can offer you an impartial space to express your feelings 💔.

Repeating the same patterns of behaviour, and wondering why nothing ever seems to change in your life. Is like conducting the same scientific experiment over and over again without changing any of the variables, and expecting a new outcome every time.

Change will come from you recognising and learning how to break the cycle.

Have you ever come out of a volatile, or toxic, relationship that was always in turmoil. Then met someone who was nice, kind, and thoughtful, toward you, and thought “hmmmm they’re boring” or “they’re a bit too nice” “they give me the ick” etc?

Before you decide that’s not what you want, first consider whether you feel that way because they aren’t triggering an anxious trauma response in you that you have now associated, or confused, with love.

Green flags are not red ones. You deserve to be treated well 💕

As a long-standing people pleaser this was something that took me a long time to understand. So there is heavy emphasis on the ‘delivery’ part of this sentiment; remember that you can be true to yourself, not at the expense of deliberately causing someone pain.
