ITS GOODBYE FOR NOW 👋 💔

It is with a very heavy heart, that we announce we will not be restarting our antenatal classes as hoped this summer. For reasons beyond our control we are having to make the tricky decision to cancel our planned course starting 7th August and any future planned sessions.

Whilst we hope that this is not goodbye forever, and we do hope that in the future we can relaunch, it only feels right to thank each and every one of you who has helped support our little business venture!

So, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you!!! Every like and share on our posts, every recommendation to family and friends, the wonderful team at Fernwood village hall for hosting us and to our wonderful special guests who helped make our classes unique, thank you to you all!

Lots of love,
Lucina Mama 💚

E A R L Y L A B O U R 🤰🏼

The day you’ve been waiting for has finally arrived, you’re going into labour and a step closer to meeting your baby (or babies)…how exciting!

You decide to contact your maternity unit and they advise to stay home a little longer! But why? We promise it’s not because midwives don’t want to support you…we actually want to help you!

🏡 Home is where you feel safe, so staying there is going to help increase your levels of oxytocin (the hormone that supports uterine contractions) and support the progression of your labour!

🏥 If you think about it, in the main, we don’t have positive associations with hospitals. It’s usually a case that we’ve only been to them (pre-pregnancy) if we’ve been poorly, or our friends and family have been. As a result, attending hospitals can increase our adrenaline hormones. Adrenaline inhibits Oxytocin, which can slow down your labour!

⏰ Labour itself can be very stop start and so we may ask you to time your contractions and see if they get any closer- we are usually looking for 3-4 contractions in 10 minutes, with each lasting around 60 seconds. So we may be waiting for your labour to establish more!

⚠️ However….remember you know your body best. If you feel being at home is no longer best for you, communicate that over the phone with your maternity unit and they will invite you in for an assessment!

💚 We cover information around early labour as part of our antenatal course! To learn more about what to expect from labour including what to pack in your hospital bag and different modes of birth, why not book onto our next course block! 💚

O P T I M A L C O R D C L A M P I N G 🩸

Choosing to delay the clamping and cutting of your baby’s cord really is the gift that keeps on giving! Delayed cord clamping and optimal cord clamping are used interchangeably however they are slightly different!

Delayed cord clamping refers to simply a timed delay in the cutting of the cord, for example 3 or 5 minutes. Whereas, optimal cord clamping is the process of waiting for the cord to stop pulsating and turn white before cutting.

There are many benefits of this including:

🩸 increased iron stores for baby up to 6 months of age, supporting growth and emotional development

🩸 increased stem cells within your newborn, supporting the development of their immune system

If you are considering donating cord blood for either stem cells or medical research, you can still have delayed cord clamping. However, once this is completed it is best to promptly transport to the company supporting the donation, so that the maximum donation can be obtained.

💚 Our Antenatal Course covers information about Optimal Cord Clamping and lots of other aspects around newborn care! If you wish to book onto our next course, please get in touch today 💚
