END OF AN ERA !

Today is quite an emotional day.

It signals the end of an era. My husband has been coaching Sunday league lads football for the last 14 years. Today was the final match for both him and our middle son.

It has been a long period - full of highs and lows, achievements, medals and disappointments … and a huge commitment in terms of time and effort.

It is indeed a privilege to invest in young lads lives’, build a team, develop each individual as well as put out a team that can compete week in week out!

What will Sunday’s look like now?!?!

RUN YOUR OWN RACE!

I went to a school athletics tournament today.

It really interesting to see the many different events, different ages, different abilities, separate groups of boys and girls.

It really struck me that within each event were clearly students who were very, very competent and competitive in their field. They were aiming to win and really push themselves.

In contrast, it was evident that some students were trying a new event
e.g. hurdles or high jump for the first time! Their goal was to just join in and finish!

This got me thinking.,,

Each person has to run their own race - the best way they can!

If you try to run a race like someone else, you will either get left far behind and feel like a failure, or race off in front and not reach your top potential!

“ONE THING! “

Today, as part of a workshop with a local business, I posed a question to the group. I asked them to write down the following in a workbook.

“What is 1 thing that you will commit to that will help you to be the best version of you at work? “

This was followed by;

“ Plan - how will you do this?”

“Change- what will you do differently?”

“Results - what will the benefits be for you and the business?”

Let’s just say the level of engagement was 💯, the group was really supportive of each other, offering practical suggestions. Barriers were broken down. The energy in the room soared!

Just brilliant 🤩

GOOD COMMUNICATION IS SERIOUSLY UNDERRATED!

I witnessed a chaotic situation yesterday between my teenage son and 2 of his mates! They had decided last minute that they wanted to play golf in the evening. One of them would pick our son up.

At @5, We asked our son to quickly help with a job in the garden - making it clear that if he needed to get ready for golf, then he was free to leave us to it.

After the job was finished, we asked our son what was happening about golf? He looked pretty cheesed off at this point.

“I’m not going now…!”

As it transpires, whilst our son was helping in the garden, his mate had come to pick him up and not been able to get hold of him. He wasn’t sure what to do because no firm plans - only a vague “@5:15 ish” had been discussed or decided. He didn’t want to be late to pick up the other friend, so they had gone to golf without him!

At 5:10… Our son was helping in the garden, knowing that he should be getting ready soon but didn’t know what time it was! He had not told us that he was due to be picked up at 5:15ish so we didn’t alert him to the time!

Definitely a great example of what can go wrong when good communication does not happen !

I know I am guilty of getting it wrong too!

WALKING AND TALKING!

I went along to my first INTO walking group this morning at the Brampton.
It was absolutely brilliant, and altogether there were 22 other ladies.

Vicki and Charlotte ( the facilitators) were really chuffed to have such a good big group of people there.

This inclusive group really offers an important way to get people regularly meeting up - walking, talking and supporting each other. What a fantastic combination!

It was great to have some very interesting conversations, especially with a number of women who were attending for the first time. It was a relaxed and informal atmosphere with lots of laughter and constant chatter!

Look forward to going again!

THE PATH TO INDEPENDENCE CAN SOMETIMES GET MESSY!

As a parent, I know the quandary of wanting to encourage my kids to be more independent, and knowing it is probably quicker and easier to do it myself!

My child changing the bedsheets, and breaking one of the slats on the bed because it was a “different type of sheet to normal” is an ideal example of this! Oops!

This dilemma can also be faced in our workplaces, homes and in our everyday decisions. The problem is by always jumping in and doing things ourselves, people around us never get the chance to become more independent or self-sufficient… but that transition can often come with mistakes problems, and often a huge investment of time in the short term.

It is easy to get stuck in that pattern too. Some people are quite happy to remain stuck as it is easier for other people to keep doing things for them. Others are quite happy to remain in control and make sure that things are done to the standard and way they want.

The long-term benefits being that we can hand that particular task over to someone who is now competent and confident… but that can take time, effort and investment to get there!

So what do you think?

Now … I have a bed in need of fixing!!!

“HARD WORK BEATS TALENT WHEN TALENT DON’T WORK”

One of the Dad’s at Football is running the Manchester marathon tomorrow. He has a rather impressive medal 🏅 collection at running marathons, but is incredibly humble and unassuming! He is one of those amazing people that you can easily underestimate!

One thing that stands out really clearly, though is his strong work ethic… in his job, getting stray balls from the football pitch or bushes, sorting out the respect, barrier or goals. He is always the first parent to move when help is needed.

With his running and marathon training, he consistently worked hard and continued to improve. By his own admission, he is not the best runner, but by putting the effort in and working hard, he has maximised his full potential.

What a fantastic example to us all of how far hard work can take you!
