Students often find getting into research a challenging task. Some saw the Specialised Foundation Programme (SFP) as the only route. And the reputation of the SFP being an elite programme makes academia an even more out-of-reach to many medical students and graduate trainees.

That's why the Demystify team found you two experts in this area.

We have Dr Sohaib Rufai to talk about his journey in academic medicine and paediatric research. He completed his Academic Foundation Programme (AFP, predecessor of the SFP) in Southampton, Academic Clinical Fellowship (ACF) in Leicester and PhD in Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH). He would represent the “conventional” route into academic medicine.

We also have Mr Jason Powell to talk about his journey in academic medicine and paediatric research as well. He did not start his journey via AFP or ACF, but he found his passion in paediatric ENT in the middle of his training. He has completed his PhD and fellowship in University of British Columbia (UBC). He will talk about how he find his calling, and how he landed his prestigious position as a MRC Clinician Scientist.

So we get a star-studded cast in research in paediatric surgery, which is probably one of the most challenging areas of academic medicine. Hopefully, that will inspire you to get involved in research, ophthalmology, paediatrics or ENT in general!

Students often find critical appraisal and reading academic paper a challenging task. Some boil the process down to PICO, which is an important tool, but it doesn't represent the entire story.

That's why the Demystify team found you an expert in this area. He will talk about how to critically evaluate a research paper and how to interpret all those confusing terminology (ie confidence intervals, bias etc). This seminar will succinctly address what interviewees need to know to answer those questions posed by the interview panel. Showcase your understanding in academic medicine and shine in the process!

Mr O’Hara is a Consultant ENT surgeon with a specialist interest in the management of benign and malignant conditions affecting the throat, voice box, neck and salivary glands at Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital.

Mr O’Hara recently completed an MD thesis in conjunction with a large clinical trial assessing how to manage troublesome persistent throat and voice symptoms – demonstrating that the commonest treatment used for these symptoms (proton pump inhibitors, eg Lansoprazole) are ineffective.

He works with Newcastle University to deliver large trials assessing the effectiveness of tonsillectomy in adults and nasal septal surgery and is a council member on the Royal Society of Medicine, British Association of Head and Neck Oncologists, as well as head and neck cancer lead for the Northern Cancer Alliance.

Interview - How to advocate for yourself and sell your experience and achievements
Link in Bio!

For people who are applying for the SFP, you are writing up your White Space Questions (WSQs). You listed all your prizes and achievements, but how do you convey your passions to the interviewers once you score a coveted short-listing position?

The interview is short, and may only last 30 minutes with a panel. Or you may get multiple stations like you had at medical school interviews. What were the key questions? What are the good approaches to promote your personal attributes? How do you show that you are a fit for the programme? If the Interview is a two-way interaction, what are the key things to look out for? Don't worry.

The Demystify the SFP team got you covered! We will have two esteemed speakers to walk you through how they present themselves in some of the most competitive processes. They can also show how you can build a coherent argument from your WSQ responses to ace those interview questions.

Now with the third part of our White Space Question (WSQs) workshop!

It's important to showcase your talents, and skills that will make you a great fit for your desired posts and deaneries. People talk about the STAR structure and how to economise their word count down to the 200 word limit. But what else do you need to make you stand out? What are the key ingredients to successful applications.

The Demystify the SFP team brought you another two excellent speakers who have been there and done that before. They will share their thoughts, tips and tricks to make you shine.
