Therapeutic yoga practices are proving revolutionary to young people too.

When young people walk into CAMHS in Southampton, they often carry invisible weight: anxiety, trauma, or disconnection from their own bodies.
But behind one door, something remarkable is happening. Mats are rolled out, gentle breathing fills the room, and yoga therapy offers children a way to reconnect with themselves - without needing words.
Since its pilot in April 2023:
• 100+ children aged 6–17 have accessed trauma-informed yoga therapy
• Clinicians report breakthroughs where traditional therapies had stalled
• Parents see real-life changes: calmer moods, better sleep, and improved emotional regulation
As one parent said: “Before yoga, my child would hit out and shout. Now they take themselves away to calm down. It has given them a tool they can use in the moment, and the difference at home is huge.”
Dr Jo Barker, consultant psychiatrist, and Charlotta Martinus, founder of Teen Yoga, are transforming the way mental health services support young people - showing that healing can begin with a single breath.
