The story behind the horsebox…
Back in 2022 after trips to Oslo and Helsinki I felt inspired to start a project of building a sauna and thought we had the perfect spot here in Newport-on-Tay. When we found an old Rice Horsebox online the idea for a mobile sauna started.
As anyone who has renovated an old horsebox will know, you’re pretty much starting from scratch... The trailer floor was rotten, it had holes in the roof and back doors, the steel holding the main door was rusted so badly we ended cutting it off and replacing it and we had to weld a lot more support in the trailer (thanks dad!)
The design aspect took hundreds of hours, tinkering with plans and ideas. First we had to make sure it was watertight and insulate, then add a vapour barrier and clad it out in thermotreated wood. We chose to use Alder wood for the interior cladding and benches with a M3 stove to heat things up, and we couldn’t be happier with the results!
The Horsebox has even had a side gig as a ticket office at one of infamous pier parties 🐬
The inaugural Horsebox Sauna session was hosted on Boxing Day 2023 when we had sauna master Lucas fly all the way from Oslo to light the fire 🔥
It has turned out even better than I had imagined and it’s been a joy to see so many people enjoy the Horsebox Sauna and have it travel to so many class spots.
