Let’s start at the beginning by looking at what ADHD is and equally importantly, what it isn’t.
ADHD is a Neurodevelopmental condition described as a ‘persistant pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity that interferes with functioning or development’.
What this means is we don’t just assess for the symptoms in isolation, but the severity of the symptoms and subsequent impact on a person’s functioning. The impact on life domains such as education, work or relationships is significant, affecting day to day living.
Current diagnostic criteria requires symptoms to have been present before the age of 12, but we know that a small percentage of adults can have late onset.
ADHD isn’t a choice or something you can pick up or put down. It isn't laziness, defiance, or a failure to understand tasks or instructions. It also isn't a fad, despite what the media is trying to portray.
