Stillness is not about escaping the world or keeping everything calm. It is about remembering that beneath the movement, there is a steady place within us that we can return to. And each time we slow down, breathe, and notice this, we can reconnect with that quiet centre. That is at the heart of mindfulness practice.

Practising awareness of the breath, noticing sensations in the body, and observing thoughts without judgement helps us remain present even when things feel challenging. The aim is not to remove the chaos or make life quieter, but rather to cultivate an inner steadiness that supports us through whatever arises.

Life does not become quieter when we practise mindfulness. The noise, the uncertainty and the challenges are still there, but our relationship to them changes. We begin to create an inner space where we can observe rather than immediately react, where we can respond with awareness instead of habit. This is where we find peace.

When the world feels heavy, it's important to take care of ourselves so that we can support ourselves and others more effectively. At the moment, I'm looking out for small things we can do each day to promote positive thinking and lifestyle changes.

We often find ourselves weighed down by our own thoughts and this can be overwhelming and stressful. It can help to write down just one thought that feels too much, and then release it. Releasing it could mean throwing it away, burning it or simply putting it in a jar - physically letting it go.

Let me know about the small things you're doing in the comments...

Pigeon Pose, or Kapotasana, is a posture or asana that involves bringing one knee forward toward the wrist on the same side and extending the other leg straight out behind you. It opens the hip flexors and external rotators, encouraging flexibility and mobility in the hips. This asana can help to relieve tension in the lower back, improve your posture, and enable the release of emotional stress stored in the hips.

The name of the asana comes from the Sanskrit word kapotasana - kapota meaning ‘pigeon’ and asana meaning ‘pose’.

Yoga classes are on Mondays and Wednesdays at Namaste Barn and you'll find our full schedule on our website.

Yoga teaches us that everything is cyclical – including our energy, our motivation, and our needs.

Here in the UK, the seasons are a powerful invitation to tune into ourselves and vary our practice throughout the year.

Winter gives us permission to rest deeply. These are short days, with inward energy, enabling deep rest. Winter suits yoga practices such as yin, restorative asanas, breathwork and longer holds.

Spring reminds us to begin again. It’s a time for growth, fresh starts and gentle energy. Your yoga practice could include heart openers, twists and slow strength-building.

Summer invites us to expand and play, with long days and higher energy. Your yoga practice might incorporate more flowing sequences, backbends and playful movement.

Autumn asks us to slow down and release, grounding and making space for change. In your yoga practice, you might add plenty of forward folds, hip openers and slower pacing.

There’s no “one-size-fits-all” practice. The most sustainable yoga practice is the one that changes with you.

Which season are you in right now – in your body and in your life?

Yoga is a daily reminder that peace isn’t something we wait for, it’s something we become. One breath at a time.

This Jimi Hendrix quote reminds me that real change doesn’t start in systems or structures, it starts within us. In how we breathe, how we listen, how we show up on and off the mat. Yoga teaches us to choose love over ego, compassion over control and presence over fear.

That’s how we practice peace every day.

We've almost done it! We're getting through the coldest, darkest part of the year, and the light is already returning.

In the next few weeks, we'll start to see the new shoots poking through the earth and the days will be longer.

The spring always feels full of promise, and I love to see the colours emerging as crocuses and daffodils appear. I'm eager for those this year as the winter has been fairly bleak. I'm looking forward to sunshine, blue skies and some warmth to reach our haven of peace in Devon.

If you fancy a little escape to cheer you up while it's cold outside, you can book our Airbnb accommodation at Namaste Barn for your own retreat. Or just join me for a yoga class or workshop in the studio, where it's warm and cosy all year round!

The world feels pretty heavy at the moment, and it can be challenging to stay positive and focus on the good things at times like this. Right now, I'm looking at the small things I can change in my daily life to maintain my own wellbeing so that I can support myself and others.

We may not always have time for a long yoga session, or even for a short yoga nidra (although if you have time, you absolutely should embrace these at every opportunity), but we always have time for five breaths.

Even if you are cooped up inside, watching the rain or working hard (or both!), it can be very helpful to step outside for a couple of minutes and take five slow, deep breaths of fresh air. This is a mini reset for your nervous system and can help you to get back to your day with renewed energy and positivity.

Please share the small things you are doing in the comments!

In yoga and mindfulness, we practice anchoring ourselves in the present moment through breath, movement and awareness.

When we ground ourselves in the moment, we create a sense of inner support. This makes it easier to handle stress and anxiety with steadiness rather than overwhelm.

Each mindful breath, each intentional pose, is a reminder that you are here, you are supported and you are capable of responding with calm and clarity.

Come back to the moment. Your body and mind know the way.

This quote by author, Paul Theroux, offers us a gentle reminder that this season isn’t about pushing ourselves, rushing around or producing more. It’s about resting, restoring and setting ourselves up for the months ahead.

If your energy feels lower, if you can't face your usual routine and you're craving simplicity, you are not alone. You’re exactly where you need to be, and giving yourself some grace can help you to make the most of the winter.

Honour the slower pace. Spring will come in its own time and you will be ready to greet it.

Looking after ourselves often slips down the to-do list and this means that self care takes a back seat. Focusing on one small thing at a time can help us to make sustainable changes that, over time, can change our lives for the better.

Joint rotations can make a huge difference to your mobility, ensuring that you can still enjoy an active life as you age. Practising simple joint rotations for a few minutes each day is an easy way to take care of yourself, and I would suggest doing some of the following each day:

💚 circling your wrists in both directions
💚 stretching out your fingers and then curling them into fists
💚 pointing and flexing your feet
💚 circling the ankles
💚 drawing circles with your nose to gently ease out the neck
💚 rolling the shoulders forwards and backwards
💚 taking the arms in wide circles
💚 circling the knees and hips

Keeping the joints mobile and taking them through their full range of motion can completely change the way you feel. Just one small thing can change your life.
