The run-up to Christmas and Christmas Day itself can be especially emotional after losing someone you love, whether your bereavement is recent or many years ago.

Here are some gentle suggestions that others have found helpful during this time:
✅ Acknowledge it may be tough.
Keep the traditions that bring comfort and change the ones that don’t. You can create a new tradition in memory of your loved one.
✅ Choose what feels right.
Spend time with people who support you, attend only what you feel comfortable with, and keep plans simple.
✅ If you have children.
involve them in planning and reassure them it’s okay to enjoy Christmas.
✅ Accept help.
So you can have quiet moments when you need them.
✅ Be patient with yourself and others.
Everyone grieves differently talk openly about how you’re feeling.
✅ Make time for fresh air or a walk.
It can be a calming way to remember your loved one.
✅ Be mindful of coping mechanisms.
If you’re turning to alcohol or substances, reach out to someone you trust or your GP.
✅ It’s okay to make alternative plans.
If Christmas Day feels overwhelming.
✅ Don’t feel guilty about moments of joy.
They don’t lessen your love or how much you miss them.
