🌞 Elderly Care – Hot Weather Checklist (up to 26°C+)

1️⃣ Keep Cool
☐ Curtains/blinds closed on sunny sides (blocks heat from direct sun)
☐ Windows shut during hottest hours (11 am–3 pm) (keeps hot air out ,open again when it’s cooler)
☐ Fans used safely (avoid long periods directly on frail clients)

2️⃣ Hydration
☐ Offer cool drinks at least every hour (prevents dehydration ,thirst signals are weaker in older adults)
☐ Include hydrating snacks (watermelon, cucumber, jelly, ice lollies)
☐ Avoid too much caffeine/alcohol (both can worsen dehydration)

3️⃣ Clothing & Bedding
☐ Loose, light-coloured, breathable clothes (helps body release heat)
☐ Switch heavy bedding for a light sheet if resting (prevents overheating while napping)

4️⃣ Sun Safety
☐ Keep indoors during peak heat (reduces risk of heat exhaustion)
☐ If outside, ensure hat, light clothing, shade, and SPF 30+ (protects skin and prevents overheating)

5️⃣ Monitor Health
☐ Watch for confusion, dizziness, headache, nausea, rapid pulse (early signs of heat stress)
☐ Move to a cooler place and give fluids if any signs appear (quick action prevents escalation)
☐ Call GP/999 if symptoms do not improve quickly (heat stroke is a medical emergency)

6️⃣ Extra Contact
☐ Check in more often with high-risk clients (especially those alone or with health conditions)
☐ Remind them to drink and rest regularly (repetition helps, especially if forgetful)
