We want the Government to improve the lives of people of all ages with communication and swallowing needs by ensuring they are able to access the speech and language therapy that they and their families and carers need.

A number of research studies have identified that children and young people who have social, emotional mental health needs have Developmental Language Disorder but it has not been identified. So many young people get labelled as uncooperative when they do not understand what they are being told. They fall out with others because the communication breaks down.

Look behind the behaviour. Could language be playing a role? Refer to a Speech-Language Pathologist/Therapist if you have any concerns. Once the language needs are identified support plans can be put in place. Something as simple as supporting a young person to say 'I don't understand' can be transformational.

Let's go looking for DLD. It is common, so the chances are you know children and young people who no one knows they have DLD.
