Today sparks the beginning of Black history month.
As a parent and as a Birthworker looking back and learning from my past, from my parents generation and from my ancestors is important to me.

Our history is everyones history

Our history is powerful

Our history is emotional

Our history is empowering

So during October my mouth will be wide open ( not like it isn’t anyway but hey 🤷🏽‍♀️) and I will be talking about my experiences and those of my peers, parents, and ancestors.

Sharing knowledge of those that went before us with those that are with us on this journey and those that will walk in our footsteps and surpass us is important.

What does Black History Month mean to you?
What would you like to know/ talk about this Black History Month?

It's Black Breastfeeding Week! This year's theme is The BIG PAUSE and we are joining the hosts of Black Breastfeeding Week to help bring honor and awareness to Black Breastfeeding and the power of rest as a revolution for Black communities.

Breastfeeding Stress reduction is key, as your milk supply depends mostly on your mood. When a mother is anxious, her breast milk supply usually decreases dramatically. Breastfeeding is calming and has been proven to reduce the incidence of postpartum depression.

To learn more about ways you can reduce breastfeeding stress and make life easier for you and your baby, check out these tips: https://breastfeeding-problems.com/breastfeeding-stress/

You can ask for a caesarean birth even if your doctor or midwife doesn’t think that you have a medical need for one- This is called a maternal request caesarean birth.

Your hospital must listen to your reasons for wanting a caesarean birth and have good reasons for saying no.

Ok
I knew one of these feeding organisations were gonna mess with my spirit this Black breastfeeding week and p**s me right off.

This….. This right here is fukries.

Imma call out on this and, to be honest, it’s not the first time they be centering white people in other peoples business.

You have to ask yourself do they really know how rude this is, do they actually care.

I have always said actions speak louder than words and you will probably see it either deleted or changed with a sorry etc etc.

However as I tell my 5 yr old all the time, sorry doesn’t fix things, don’t say you are sorry and keep doing the same thing. Make a change in your behaviour, SHOW ME you are sorry by your actions. Consistently not just once.

I’m so p**sed right now…….

F***s sake!

Before anyone tells me i’m overreacting, I’m not. I do have a history with BFN but I can also be a professional and set aside person feelings.

For those who want to know more about my relationship with BFN don’t worry imma share all details in a post or two soon.
I wasn’t going to but feel transparency and holding these organisations accountable is a must if we want to see change for the positive.

Today I would like to talk about the black and brown uk based people doing the work, educating their peers, providing lactation education and informing parents, sometimes providing free or subsidised information and services to black and brown parents

Tirelessly every day, every week, every month they stand up and are counted.

I SEE YOU
WE SEE YOU
WE APPRECIATE YOU

Let’s uplift these amazing individuals.
Let’s celebrate them and all their efforts.

Name a black / brown lactation professional that you know, have used, plan to use, follow, respect.
Too many times I get asked for melanated lactation professions in xyz area….

Let’s share their names so they can be found easier by those needing their services
I will share some of my go to professionals/ pages sharing knowledge and supporting the community 🤱🏿🤱🏾🤱🏽

Black Breastfeeding Week was founded in 2013 to help address the racial disparity in breastfeeding rates.

Kimberly Seals Allers, Kiddada Green and Anayah Sangodele-Ayoka who created Black Breastfeeding Week wanted to raise awareness of the disparities in Black Breastfeeding rates, address the high Black infant mortality rate, high rates of diet-related disease, lack of diversity in the lactation field and cultural barriers among Black women.

Many Black women still negatively associate breastfeeding with their historical role as wet nurses. Slave owners would purchase Black women to nurse their babies, very often forcing these Black women to stop breastfeeding their own babies.
