Hard, smooth flooring can present challenges for many dogs, particularly older animals or those experiencing joint or muscular discomfort (Budsberg et al., 2004; Innes, 2003). During colder weather, muscles and connective tissues may feel stiffer, making slippery surfaces even more difficult to navigate—especially first thing in the morning or after periods of rest. Owners may notice slower movements, hesitation, or a cautious, bracing posture as dogs work to maintain balance.
Providing consistent traction through the use of rugs, runners, or non-slip mats can help dogs move more confidently and comfortably, supporting mobility and reducing the risk of slips or injuries throughout winter and beyond (Millis & Levine, 2014).
