Hi everyone, a very warm welcome to those who have recently started to follow my page, and joined me at one of my mantra and yoga events. LONG POST WARNING! :-)
Here's a peek into my background, my journey with healing chant and yoga, and why I do what I do...
Although I'd dipped a toe with chant in London way back in the 80's (I was presenting at the Mind, Body, Spirit Show and met Jill Purce), it didn't actually make much sense to me at the time.
Fast forward to 1999 and I was led to my main teacher, Dr Patricia Cook of the Open Ear Center, nr Seattle, Washington State. As a family we'd moved there for my husband's job, but little did I realise that this was a life changing opportunity for me. Pat has studied cross-cultural healing chant for over five decades, and travelled extensively studying directly with indigenous healers in her home country of the USA, plus India, Nepal, Tibet, and Indonesia.
I was so lucky to train with her (Cross-cultural healing sound and chant) and completed her Advanced Practitioner training over a 3 year period. We learnt healing chants from the Hindu, Tibetan, Buddhist, Indonesian and Vedic traditions.
For me it was life changing. Like many healers I definitely came under the "wounded healer" label, and chant helped to change the vibration, the energetic pattern of long-held trauma, health issues I'd had some years previously, and shifted my mindset.
Chant and mantra have been alongside me for over 25 years now - through parenting, separation and divorce, struggling with ME/CFS, and during lockdown a diagnosis and surgery for breast cancer. It's been a challenging life (so far!), but mantra is always the first thing I turn to for a sense of comfort, grounding and inspiration.
Resilience has become more of a buzzword in recent years - but when we feel we can do something about our situation (internally if not externally), we feel more in control, that we have choices, and don't fall into a state of victimhood or helplessness. No matter how tough some situations were, I always felt chant would open doors for me (which they did).
Mantras are ancient, and are said to hold sacred vibrations. Used for health, healing and spiritual connection - they are as relevant today as they were thousands of years ago.
There is an art and science to mantra and it is important to me to share my ever-evolving current understanding to those who are curious, hear the call, or feel drawn to this authentic form of sacred healing.
We can't chant what we like...ie the sounds (words), melody and rhythm of the mantras all combine to create that healing resonance. Change something (from the original) without understanding what those changes mean, can lead you to chant gobbledeegook!! :-)
We have fun when we learn to chant. Laugh at our mistakes (and know we are forgiven), enjoy the challenge and MOST IMPORTANTLY can quickly feel how the mind becomes calm, the body soothed, and our outlook improves.
YOGA - I combine holistic yoga (rooted in Hatha) with healing mantra, making the chanting accessible, the asana/postures more meditative and overall our physical, mental and emotional experience of yoga deeper.
This just gives an overview of my journey with chant - there's way more (!), but thanks for reading this far...it will be lovely to connect with you (again) soon.
Watch out for new Vedic chant courses about to be launched, Mantra as Medicine retreat days coming up soon in Devon, and our much loved Sound & Silence retreats are a monthly treat again too.
