Mantra as Medicine – beginners and beyond

This two-part mini course is for those who are completely new to chanting, those with a little experience and open to anyone who loves chant – but would like to understand the foundations of mantra.

We will explore the history of Sanskrit healing chant starting with the Vedic (original) tradition – and then understand the evolution of chants across the ages. I’m keeping it simple, clear and accessible.

Once you understand the roots you will really appreciate how precious Sanskrit chant is.
Learn healing chants for your physical, mental and emotional health.

Gain confidence in your voice – and yourself.
Begin to sense the sacredness of the mantras – and honour the innate spiritual resonance held within each one.

There is something deeply familiar about chanting, mantra, music, and vibration.

Long before words, before form and identity, there was sound. And somewhere inside us, the soul remembers.

This is why mantra feels so powerful. It’s not just repetition of syllables; it’s a remembering. A tuning back into the original frequency of who we are.

When we chant, we’re not trying to create something new; we’re dissolving layers, returning to something ancient and subtle.

Sound moves through the body in ways the mind cannot. It softens us. It aligns us. It brings us out of thought and into presence.

Whether it’s a sacred mantra, a simple hum or a collective chant in a room full of voices, vibration has the power to heal, to open, and to connect us back to the essence of being.

We don’t just hear sound… we are sound remembering itself.

I didn't go looking for chant...
Chant found me.
It was an immediate sense of coming Home. (Sarena)

I had some pelvic and lower back pain when I arrived -
all gone after the chant vibrations. 🙂

Recently, I’ve been asked how my 8 month course works and I thought it might be helpful to unpack this.

The course will involve some in person group work, some online group sessions and plenty of individual support, to help you develop your journey in chant and mantra.

We’ll meet for two residential weekends, three in-person days and several online gatherings. These will be a chance to build community and explore the history and power of chant.

We’ll learn a variety of mantras from classical Sanskrit and other sacred traditions, and we’ll develop embodied practices that incorporate yoga and mindful movement.

I’ll provide the resources and support you need to follow your own journey, and together, we will weave a tapestry of sound, movement, and reflection, creating a community where heart and voice come alive.

This journey is open to all who are drawn to the healing power of sacred sound — whether you are a curious beginner, an experienced practitioner, a yoga teacher or therapist wishing to expand your practice. No previous chanting experience is required — only your curiosity, openness and intention to explore.

Find out more, get in touch or book your place on my website.

Mantras come from the spiritual traditions of ancient India and were passed down through generations by sages and teachers. The Vedic mantras are said to be divinely inspired, and these are the original chants. We still use these chants today, as well as more modern variations.

Mantra and chant have many benefits for the mind, body and spirit, and these are well documented. The vibration of chant has a healing effect on the body and can calm and focus the mind.

When we chant, our exhale lengthens and this is soothing for the nervous system. The humming vibration influences the vagus nerve, which is responsible for our digestion, immunity and emotional regulation.  Chant can benefit mood, energy, sleep, digestion, immune function and more.

You can find out more about chant on my website, and you can join me to take a deep dive into chant in my 8 month programme, The Art of Healing Chant.

What Is the Role of Chanting in Spiritual Practice?

Sanskrit mantras help us connect to our innate spirituality by initially calming the mind and bringing our awareness inward.

Sanskrit is considered a sacred language – and the mother of all languages. It dates back 5000 years, and is used in rituals, for prayers, healing and spiritual connection.

Chanting with focus and intention combines with the sacred energy of the chant to create a healing resonance allowing deeper awareness to naturally arise.

Over time, this practice helps us reconnect with our inner wisdom, creating a sense of clarity, grounding, and spiritual presence.
