In 2010 I qualified as a registered nurse and have worked in healthcare since. The people I meet, the journeys they take and the things I learn and practice professionally have helped to shape my outlook on health and wellness.
As a child I was a gymnast, naturally strong and flexible and had the stamina to run both short and long distance. Once those teenage years kicked in, my interest in any form of exercise very much faded into the background, spending every waking minute with my friends instead. So, my personal journey towards health and fitness started later than some, I was late to the party! In 2013 I started doing weekly yoga classes and spent some time practicing bikram yoga. The combination of flexibility, strength and stamina required to get through a 90 minute bikram class basically led me to want to exercise again! It was something I could do and enjoyed doing- a revelation! Around four years ago things changed again and I began favouring going to the gym on a Sunday morning over going out on a Saturday night. I started noticing how my body responded to the activities I asked it to do and the foods I chose to eat. In 2015 I joined a gym, started doing some classes and soon felt confident enough to fill my own time there, predominantly focusing on weight training. I quickly became dedicated to building the best version of myself and the gym became my happy place (having regular access to a sauna and steam room was a big plus too!) I would always try to train my whole body when I exercised and generally incorporated stretching and yoga postures into my routine. In 2018 my husband and I sold our home and left our jobs to travel and volunteer around Portugal. During this time we spent five weeks volunteering at a yoga retreat and its was our time there that changed everything. We met some amazing inspirational people, practiced yoga every day and not long after leaving, travelled to India to undertake our yoga teacher training.
My approach to health and fitness is not just about how much weight I can lift, or how long I can run for. It’s an holistic approach focusing on complete fitness where strength and stamina, mobility and balance, flexibility and fluidity are all as important as each other. It is my belief that the key to to achieving true, lifelong health and fitness is to incorporate all of these elements into your routine.
