Yesterday was International Yoga Day!🙏🏻 Research shows that carrying out yoga regularly during pregnancy has multiple benefits. If you’re pregnant and would like to try pregnancy yoga I can highly recommend Debbie from BabyFit. She’s super qualified, experienced, knowledgeable, kind and fun! If you don’t know if you’ll like yoga why not sign up for a trial class this Thursday 27th June?
Just a quick reminder on International Yoga Day that yoga has been shown to be effective.
A systematic review and meta-analysis examined the characteristics and effectiveness of pregnancy yoga interventions.
“Twenty-nine studies with 2217 pregnant women were included for meta-analysis.
Pregnancy yoga interventions reduced anxiety, depression and perceived stress.
Yoga interventions also reduced duration of labour and, increased odds of normal vaginal birth and tolerance for pain."
"Twelve or more yoga sessions delivered weekly/bi-weekly had a statistically significant impact on mode of birth, while 12 or more yoga sessions of long duration (> 60 min) had a statistically significant impact on perceived stress.”
We do need better evidence, because the quality of the evidence isn't high. But this is partly because most research funding goes to pharmaceuticals, interventions and things that make money for companies and governments.
The researchers concluded that, “The evidence highlights positive effects of pregnancy yoga on anxiety, depression, perceived stress, mode of birth and duration of labour.” (Corrigan et al 2022).
One caveat: do make sure you're with a properly qualified pregnancy yoga teacher, not someone who is good at Instagram but has only done a weekend yoga course.
You can find a directory of online and live classes at , whose teachers have in-depth yoga AND childbirth education training.
And happy yoga day!
