As we move into 2026, I’m holding an intention to slow things down.
To be more intentional.
To stay curious.
To become more aware of what actually matters.
Therapy often invites us to strip things back—to return to the basics of being human.
Less doing.
More being.

Film Review: Christy
Christy is a powerful film based on the true story of Christy Martin, an incredible female boxer who broke through at a time when women were still fighting to be accepted in the sports world. The film follows her rise to fame, but just as importantly, it shows what was happening outside the ring—her experience of domestic abuse at the hands of her trainer and husband.
What this film does really well is show how abusive relationships don’t usually start with violence. Instead, they slowly creep in through control, fear, and manipulation, gradually wearing a person down and stripping away their sense of who they are. It’s a hard watch at times, but it feels honest and real.
The film also explores Christy’s sexuality and the masks she felt she had to put on to be accepted and taken seriously as a female athlete. We also see her family dynamics, particularly her relationship with her mother, and how these early relationships may have shaped her vulnerability later on.
Despite everything, this is ultimately a story about resilience. Christy is a fighter in every sense of the word—she fought in the ring, and she fought for her life.
Sydney Sweeney is excellent in this role. While much of the conversation focused on her physical transformation, it would be a shame to miss the emotional depth and strength she brings to Christy’s story.
Highly recommend, though please be aware it includes domestic violence triggers and may not be for everyone.
