3rd year student Georgia spent two weeks shadowing SALT and Light. Here’s what she had to say about her experience….
“To gain more experience of how I can support children with their speech and language, I shadowed Sherisse at SALT and Light.
I joined her on her school visits where we saw up to 15 pupils in a day, audited schools, had 1-1 home visits, lead staff training sessions, joined MDT meetings and liaised with parents. During this time, the needs and conditions of the pupils we have supported have differed from speech difficulties, brain injury, to wheelchair users, Down Syndrome and Autism, just to name a few.
She explained her approaches, rationale behind therapy decisions, benefits of certain resources and showed me helpful websites that can support my teaching practice.
This experience has massively influenced my understanding of communication methods, colourful semantics, AAC, the Total Communication Approach, language stimulation boards, the five point scale, Makaton and the importance of supporting speech and language at a universal classroom level through the environment.
