Some Truths physiotherapists want you to know:

#1 Pain. discomfort doesn’t mean you’re broken. Pain can mean you’re adapting and changing. If you have been in pain for a long time, your body can also remember this pain and hold on to it. We want to listen, and understand YOUR pain and help YOU learn how YOU can conquer it.

#2 MRI imaging is only used as a tool for information. It is NOT the whole story. Pain is more complex.

#3 Don’t set your goal for pain relief, set it to be stronger- with strength comes resilience. This takes time and we as physios want to work with you to achieve this and help you have the power of your own health 💙

The Mummy MOT

Up to half of all people experience weakness of both the tummy muscles and pelvic floor muscles after giving birth. Up to a third will still have a gap of their tummy muscles after pregnancy. This can sometimes lead to reduced strength of the core muscles and can develop into pelvic pain, back pain, bladder and bowel symptoms, and sexual dysfunction.

All too often in clinic people will say to us ‘I thought it was just something I had to put up with having after I had my baby’. This is not the case! It can be treated with specialist physiotherapy.

It is recommended that women have an initial assessment (Mummy MOT) ideally around 6 weeks following delivery, however we treat many women who gave birth years ago that have pelvic floor related issues or a tummy gap dysfunction and they can still gain positive results even that far down the line.

A Mummy MOT is a specialist postnatal examination for women following both vaginal and caesarean deliveries. It will assess how your posture, pelvic floor muscles and stomach muscles are recovering after birth. Then the physiotherapist can provide you with exercises and treatment to help in your recovery and to return to life and exercise safely. Every assessment is different as some ladies may to choose to focus on one particular area and others would like a full screen, we tailor it to your needs and request. Please get in contact if you think we can help.

Maintaining a healthy diet during injury recovery is crucial for several reasons:

Tissue Repair and Healing: When you sustain an injury, your body needs extra nutrients to repair damaged tissues. Protein, in particular, is essential as it provides the building blocks (amino acids) necessary for muscle and tissue repair.
Reducing Inflammation: Certain foods, especially those rich in omega-3 fatty acids (like fish, nuts, and seeds) and antioxidants (found in fruits and vegetables), can help reduce inflammation. Lowering inflammation can speed up the healing process and reduce pain.
Maintaining Immune Function: A strong immune system is vital for preventing infections and promoting faster recovery. Vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin C, Vitamin D, and zinc, found in a balanced diet, help support immune function.
Preventing Muscle Loss: During periods of reduced activity due to injury, there is a risk of muscle atrophy (loss). A diet rich in protein, along with adequate calories, can help preserve muscle mass.
Energy for Rehabilitation: Proper nutrition ensures you have the energy to participate in physiotherapy, which is key to a full recovery.
Mood and Mental Health: A healthy diet can positively impact your mood and mental health, which is important during recovery when you might be dealing with frustration or stress related to your injury.
