Study after study consistently demonstrates that when it comes to "women of colour"/"black women", cosmetic products marketed towards this cohort are disproportionately likely to contain potentially hazardous chemicals compared to products marketed to other consumer groups. The new data out now is about synthetic hair used for braiding-which have been found to contain a host of dangerous chemicals, including unsafe levels of lead, benzene etc. This is really appalling. When we talk about equity and public health-these issues are pivotal and must be addressed. This is one of our motivations for setting up Mia Pelle (our online platform that gives consumers access to high quality skin and hair care products, as well as a customised product recommendation tool) and Eumel (a specialist hair care range developed by Dr Dadzie).
CR tested 10 of the most popular synthetic braiding hair products for heavy metals and VOCs. We found carcinogens and more in 100 percent of the samples.
