Our practises are born out of traditional yoga, meditation and relaxation techniques, and use modern research-based methods proven to reduce depression, anxiety, insomnia, chronic pain, PTSD and chemical dependency. We work with anyone from those looking to find a general sense of harmony in their life to people seeking relief from a specific condition. We also train yoga teachers and therapists wanting to broaden their skills base.

Hey Lovely Humans,

Tell me, how are you sleeping?

Maybe you nod off each night with a beatific smile on your face, or maybe you tussle and wriggle under the covers, desperate to nod off?

Do you ping awake at 4am and can’t get back to sleep? Or sleep like a babe even when your alarm goes off?

The truth is, we all have struggles with sleep at certain points in our lives. We know what it’s like when we’re getting enough of it (oh the glory of a deep night’s sleep!) and many of us fantasise about sleeping longer, deeper, and with more peace and ease.

Having worked through some of my own struggles, and studied this topic extensively for many years, I’m bringing sleep to rest town in June with a deep-dive into how rest impacts sleep, how sleep impacts rest, and whilst maybe there’s not anything going ‘bump’ in the night something might be keeping you up that’s more subtle but equally disturbing…

How To Actually Rest

Our bodies are amaaaaaaaazing. They contain millions of years of evolution. Roughly 1 septillion things are happening each second (that’s roughly 24 times all the known stars in the universe) and there is a tremendous amount of feedback that comes to us from sensation, all the time. From feelings and emotions which show us when we’re ‘on’ or ‘off’ to sensations that are asking us to move, or stop, to rest and to play, our body is always telling us what our next move is.

Every sensation is trying to tell you something, and there is wisdom in them all.

One of the key things that the practice of Deep Rest (Yoga Nidra) can teach us is to listen to our sensations.

Some styles of this practice will ask you to relax and you can go ahead and do that (why not!) but what I’m interested in showing you is how to heal through surrender: how to listen deeply and be with it all - the good, the bad, the restlessness, the tiredness, the delight (yes, some of us suppress our happiness too!)

Life’s demands get in the way. The unending distractions, preoccupations, and things to get done mean that it’s hard to really commit to exploring and developing inner resilience and calm.

You begin to lose your best self and along with it, the ability to make the right choices and decisions.

You burn a little less brightly: gradually, incrementally, your energy feels all used up and the freshness and zest you had for life loses its edge.

You’re coping, but not thriving. You’re having secret longings for faraway places and another imagined life. One that’s easy and quiet. You even fantasise about getting sick: not too sick, just enough so you can take time away from work.

That longing to find calm amidst the storm begins to fade and you surrender to your lot, to the status quo, to ‘how it is’.

It’s heartbreaking. Especially as there is another possibility, one that’s simple and within reach.

On the other side of this ‘too busy’ trap lies:
- An uninterrupted core of calm that lasts throughout the day.
- Engaged focus that has you immersed in creative problem-solving.
- The ability to pivot and handle anything life throws your way.
- A renewed vigour to meet the challenges of your crazy-assed pace of life.

You could be thriving amidst the chaos, so much that you are totally unrufflable and everybody says “woooooooha, what happened to you? I want some of what you’ve got”.

And let’s face it, It’s not happened yet by your own efforts. you want to feel that mastery over life but somehow, you’ve not acted.

You keep thinking “this will get done tomorrow, once all the other important stuff is dealt with”, and – you guessed it – tomorrow is equally full of important stuff.

Hello :) This is Gabs, one half of the Restful Being founders, with a note of farewell and thanks as I am moving on from the business and from working with James.

If we haven’t met, then perhaps you've read a newsletter, blog post, or other such Restful Being missive that my fingers will have tapped away at or my brain contributed to in some way, or explored our website, which was my little ‘baby’ since its birth in 2014.

It’s been awesome to help grow this business and share everything that it stands for. Finding ways to communicate, via the written word, the experience of pure being is and always will be one of my most treasured professional, personal, and spiritual challenges. I hope that my work has in some way led you to if not try meditation, yoga, or yoga nidra, then perhaps helped connect you with or notice those fleeting moments of unattached awareness that dot our lives like little treasure chests of relief, rest, and sometimes magic.

(Ahhh…more magic, please!)

I am very sad to be leaving the business and of course everything that it represented, personally and professionally, behind.
