🌟 What is Pancreatic Exocrine Insufficiency (PEI)? 🌟

💡 PEI Explained
PEI is a condition where the pancreas doesn’t produce enough digestive enzymes, leading to poor digestion and nutrient absorption. This can result in digestive symptoms, malnutrition, and other health challenges.

Understanding PEI

Your pancreas produces enzymes like amylase, lipase, and protease to break down carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. In PEI, the lack of these enzymes causes malabsorption and related complications.

Causes of PEI
Pelvic radiation
Chronic pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)
Cystic fibrosis
Pancreatic cancer or surgery
Treatment for neuroendocrine tumour
Common Symptoms

🌀 Frequent diarrhoea or loose stools
🤕 Abdominal pain & bloating
⚖️ Unexplained weight loss or malnutrition
🧈 Fatty, pale stools (steatorrhea)
🔋 Nutrient deficiencies (e.g., vitamin D, B12)

How a Dietitian Can Help

👩‍⚕️ Nutritional Assessment
A dietitian evaluates your nutritional status to identify deficiencies and create a personalised nutrition plan.

💊 Pancreatic Enzyme Replacement Therapy (PERT)
Learn how to use PERT effectively for better digestion and nutrient absorption. Dietitians help determine the right dosage and timing to fit your needs.

🥗 Diet Modification
Get a tailored diet plan to optimise nutrient absorption, manage symptoms, and prevent malnutrition.

💬 Education & Support
Your dietitian provides expert advice on PEI management and lifestyle tips, offering emotional support to navigate life with this condition.

Dietary Tips: The Three Habit Challenge 🥩

On Monday we looked at the first of our Three Habits to follow, as recommended by our resident dietitian Gina Giebner

Today we'll be examining the second habit to follow: Prioritise Protein!

Most of us consume enough protein, but for some these needs increase for muscle gain, recovery, and optimal health. Additionally, a lot of this protein is sourced from fatty meats and unprocessed snack foods. We aim not only to optimise your protein intake but also the quality of it!

On Saturday we'll be posting the final habit of the Three Habit Challenge: Eat Mindfully.

Keep an eye out for our future posts and dietary tips!
