It’s getting colder out. The light is fading earlier every day and the darkness of winter surrounds us, creeping inch by inch closer. Inside your home though the fire burns, the lights glow gently and the noise of a kettle gently simmers in the background, already bringing comfort and warmth to your bones.
Isn’t it amazing how a cup of tea (or coffee) can bring us so much comfort. Well I did a little research into what a cup of tea is actually doing once it’s made its way down to your tummy providing that warm glow on a winter morn or eve. Here is what I learned….
A cup of black tea contains polyphenols (with antioxidant properties), flavonoids and antimicrobial properties. Studies have concluded that these ingredients play an effective role in decreasing the risk of chronic disease. They potentially reduce the risk of heart disease by reducing the levels of LDL in our bodies (these are lipoproteins and too much of them can lead to heart disease).
Studies also have shown that black tea may also help with gut health and our immune system. Further research provided positive results in stroke prevention. Black tea also assists with the use of insulin in our bodies and the control of blood sugar thanks to catechin in tea called epigallocatechin gallate. And this of course can help with the management of type one diabetes and the prevention of type two. There are even studies that show properties in tea can reduce the growth of cancer cells.
So snuggle up guys with your warm cuppa and a very happy start to your festive season!
