"Why is this so hard?"

When we give up alcohol, meat, or a long-standing habit, our brains often protest. This is because these things often serve as "coping anchors" for stress or boredom. When we remove the anchor, we have to learn how to sit with the feelings underneath.

If you’re finding your January challenge difficult, try this: Next time you feel an urge to break your commitment, stop and ask: "What am I actually needing right now? Is it a drink, or is it rest? Is it comfort, or is it a distraction?"

Understanding the need is the first step to mastering the habit.
