This was already known in 1957. Well what happened then?

Brilliant post by and find by .fi , a fellow barefoot enthusiast health pro.

® "A child has to be
barefoot without shoes and socks whenever possible, in their baby bed and all summer in
their own yards. It's best to strengthen the legs.
When you have to wear footwear, it must be as soft as possible, with a sock and a woven slipper,
reinforced with leather. Or outdoors a worthless slipper made of soft leather, with a large big toe
space. The foot takes advantage of its free and abundant muscle activity, using the head to grow
and make every muscle develop strong. Those strong muscles give the foot much stronger
support than the best shoe."

Translated from the book
Young Mother - Doctor's advice for a young
mother, Maija Taka, pages 143-144.

Fashion and culture took over to make shoes pointy and a running boom that saw cushioning and a heel become normal is what happened 😣

The plantar fascia/arches ✔️
⬇️
Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common forms of foot pain. The plantar fascia is a band of tissue that spans the bottom of the foot, originating at the heel (where pain is most commonly felt).
🦶 The plantar fascia helps support the arch of the foot. Although it plays an important role in foot function, it can be overloaded over time. Plantar fasciitis is essentially tissue overload causing pain at the site of attachment (the heel).
⬇️
The plantar fascia doesn’t work in isolation. Although it plays a big role in supporting the arch, there are many other players in the arch support system that must be taken into account:
• The intrinsic muscles of the foot.
• The lower leg musculature, which attaches into the foot/ankle and helps support the arch and create a rigid lever.
• The hip, which is a huge factor in foot function and control of the arch downstream via the torque and stability it creates for everything below it.
⬇️
All of these elements are necessary for functional feet/arches. Getting to the root of plantar fasciitis often involves strengthening these other ‘arch support’ tissues and building better overall stability.
⬇️
The feet are loaded with muscle. Clinically, foot strength is often lacking in those with plantar fasciitis, and this is one of the potential reasons it is getting overloaded. Part of any treatment should be to gradually build up strong, robust feet that are capable of handling repetitive load.

Older people living in Carlton Colville, Kessingland, Southwold and surrounding villages are invited to exchange their old, worn-out slippers for free to help them stay safely on their feet in a new initiative.

The Carlton Colville, Kessingland, Southwold and surrounding villages Community Partnership is enabling older people in the area to swap their old slippers for a brand-new pair in a new project called ‘Slipper Swap’.

Many older people are keen to stay independent at home, however, walking indoors in worn-out slippers, or barefoot or in socks, can increase the risk of falls, slips and trips, meaning they might have to spend time in hospital or receive treatment at home which can make them feel less independent and more social isolated.

The aim of the project is help reduce the risks of falls, slips and trips by enabling older residents to swap their old, worn-out slippers for a brand-new pair which will include features that helps prevent falls, such as secure fastening and robust soles for example.

The Slipper Swap project is being delivered in partnership with East Suffolk Council’s Communities Team, parish and town councils and local groups and organisations.

If you, or someone you know, could benefit from a new pair of slippers to prevent falls, slips and trips, please contact the East Suffolk Communities Team on communities@eastsuffolk.gov.uk.
