ROSACEA AWARENESS MONTH | IS IT ROSACEA?
I have seen a massive increase in clients citing rosacea as their main concern. Whether self-diagnosed, mentioned by an aesthetician or diagnosed by a medical doctor, often clients are not "ticking all my rosacea boxes".
These images are a typical presentation of rosacea, though symptoms and severity will vary from each person, there are a few things that are key and typical in rosacea.
WHAT DO I LOOK FOR?
Medical diagnosis of rosacea
Age and gender
Ethnicity
Family history of rosacea
Vascularity
Worse for alcohol, spice and heat/cold
Ongoing underlying redness with regular flare-ups
Tendency to flushing
WHAT ELSE COULD IT BE?
If we can’t tick at least 3-4 of the above (particularly ethnicity and vascularity), I'm cautious about putting the client into the "rosacea box" - this can cause unnecessary worry about having a skin condition that has no cure. In my experience, clients presenting with rosacea-like symptoms could instead be experiencing:
Dermatitis
Seborrheic Dermatitis
Skin Barrier Impairment
Fungal Acne
Helicobacter Infection
All of these are conditions are treatable, so before we slap anyone with the rosacea (ie. there’s no cure, sorry) label – let’s ensure we are 100% sure it’s rosacea!
