20 years ago I returned to Scotland and began what is now, Highland Plans.

I have assisted around 1500 clients with their building projects and met some lovely people in the process.

I have drawn houses, offices, warehouses, churches, mansions, castles and even been involved in a ‘Big Brother’ TV house.

Over those 20 years, I have worked on projects throughout Scotland and also in England, Wales and Ireland.

So on this 2 decade anniversary of my business I’d like to thank each and every client who has made it possible.

Began the week with a hard disc failure warning on my screen. Having made sure that all my data was safely backed up it was off to hospital for my vital computer. So no drawings produced this week. Managed to follow up a few fresh enquiries and carry out a level survey of a plot.

Thankfully I now have my computer back and hope to be back online tomorrow. Lots of catching up to do.

First week back at work after a very restful Christmas break. 2018 looks like it will continue to be as busy as 2017 was. Recently completed plans for several extensions, alterations to an office in Perth and a new build house near Blairgowrie.

Fresh enquiries are coming in from near and far. Highland Plans may even be in Kent later in the year!

I recently compared building warrant drawings for a new build house I did back in 1998 with one I did this year. The level of information now required by councils to prove compliance with the Scottish Building Standards, is far more comprehensive than it was back then.

Edinburgh Council even demand that the final plans are coloured to their code.

This means that the architectural & engineering elements of the project need to be budgeted for; not to mention air tightness test, energy SAP calculations, council fees and possible topographical, flood, contaminated land and bat surveys too.

For these items, clients should allow at least £5000 for an extension and at least £15,000 for a new build house depending on size & complexity - considerably more if using an architect.

The last few months have involved a wide variety of jobs spread over many council regions.

Conversion of a bed & breakfast to a 'house in multiple occupation' HMO in Ullapool.

Application of external wall insulation to 55 homes in Moray, Aberdeenshire, Falkirk, Edinburgh, Midlothian & Ayrshire.

Design for a new home successfully through Planning & numerous extensions and minor alterations here in Perthshire.

Alterations to a guest house in Pitlochry to form 4 additional en-suite bedrooms.

Alterations to an office/manufacturing unit in Perth.

Schematic design for a new build house in Cambridgeshire, England.

In all, I have around 40 live jobs at the moment so am glad to be taking a long overdue week off in the North West Highlands.

Days, turn into weeks, into months and here I am with a long overdue update. Very thankful to be so busy but admin is a pressure so I've had to take on a new employee - my wife!

We were reflecting on the last 19 years of the business over which time I estimate that I have produced some 5000 drawings.
