Growing up with AuDHD, Dyspraxia and facing trauma whilst living and experiencing the world puts a neurodivergent person in a constant state of internal conflict.

The unmasked happy version when you're with yourself, feeling comfortable in your isolation and solitude despite having to face the outside world with many identities, social, emotional, mental health, communication struggles, hormones and being a Muslim, British born south-asian male teenager from a small city experiencing things he should have never had had to face, led me to feeling like I was always falling behind in life compared to my counterparts in friendships and school.

It is difficult & chaotic when shaped with responsibilities & then to top it up with building a career, healthy loving relationships & a quality life. The goal posts kept on moving & I kept chasing and getting burnt. But I could not STOP!

I thought there was something missing inside me, constantly chasing the pursuit of personal development (which is also a special interest). I couldn't keep the stress of the world away or switch my brain off.

This gave me the curiosity to ask why & always be curious. Through over a decade of God's guidance, navigating life's beauty & tribulations, having counselling, coaching, therapy, having mentors, being a youth worker, Higher Level Teaching Assistant, AuDHD Life Coach and receiving SEND training; this helped me unlearn, develop, refine & build systems/strategies so I can give back to the world in a better way so that no child or adult is left behind.

I couldn't have spent a better Friday evening in the company of authentic Islamich psycho-spiritual scholarship from Yemen & the Far East where we learnt so many gems about how integrated our faith is when dealing with an ever changing chaotic world which is costing us our attention and focus.

Contemplation paired with action is necessary to build a fulfilling life of faith & virtue, otherwise it can be dangerous if we hyperfocus on the wrong agendas/thoughts and get lost in the loop - our traumas, the devil & Nafs can jump in to compromising us, healing is necessary.

Thank you for the great work you do in our communities, it's essential in our society that we ponder over our situation for the Akhira & improving our quality of life.

This is one of the quotes I learnt when I was in my teenage years. I realised I had to play many roles in life.

Little did I know that with a late diagnosis, the level of masking I did to hide my true self inside. However as an undiagnosed AUDHDr with Dyspraxia I realised later in my life, I became my job requirement, I tried to become the best in everything I did, being the best son, husband, friend, employee, artist, community activist, entrepreneur etc and the goal post kept on changing.

The unnoticed trauma, people pleasing, fawning as took on rubbish clients as a 'starving artist', accepting bad treatment from people, working in toxic workplaces whilst thinking it was normal, the internalised suppression of the pain comes out in your body and your mind later on if left not addressed.

I had to build a brand new life at 25 years old, I was forced to stop as life was hitting a cieling. My late multiple diagnosis & spending 6 years in counselling, coaching, therapies. I learnt about my inner world, truama psychology, society and understanding my brain from different perspectives. Healing is a journey and a marathon, we have good days and bad days as humans, the inner work has helped me and my clients have more good days than bad days in life.

You are a sum of all parts, you are who you are without a label on you. We have a limited time here, don't let burn out and overstretching yourself to make the peace a part of you.

Do your best & make decisions that will reduce the allostatic/stress load on your system that can help you reduce/work with your autism & ADHD symptoms & give back stronger to your family, tribe & community.

Little did I know that my life would change when I was 15, I was exposed to more than I should, I masked myself, faced betrayal & people trying to limit me. I went off grid & switched the game plan & start building my life. Only God can save you.

Young or old, it's okay to re-invent and refine yourself as you grow.

With AuDHD, people pleasing is a strategy where we mask ourselves to feel accepted. The ADHD side of the brain primarily does it to build dopamine and make you feel you can trust them and the autistic side does it to mask their sensory symptoms to fit in both leading to long term unhealthy consequences. It's important to realise who and what drains you in life.

I spent so many years people pleasing, smoothing things over, trying to be the “easy one” so I wouldn’t lose anyone. And honestly, I’m tired. Relationships, friends, co-workers require a lot of energy and relationships are two-ways. Socialising takes up a lot of energy.

So here’s where I’m at now, and maybe it’ll speak to someone else too. You don’t have to twist yourself into knots to be acceptable. Not anymore. Not for family, not for friends, not for anyone.

If someone only likes the version of you that’s silent, shrinking, or overgiving... they don’t actually like you. They like the mask.

You’re allowed to take up space. You’re allowed to say no. You’re allowed to stop performing and let people deal with the real you. And if that makes you “unacceptable” to a few folks, that’s actually freedom.

Be who you are without the apology. The right people can handle it, celebrate you and not just tolerate you. Recovering from requires re-evaluating who what, where you put your energy into.

You got this! You are worth it.

It was a pleasure to meet today as he delivered a fantastic assembly at our school about Positive Masculinity. It really woke me up to the reality about how our perception of manliness is shaped by our media, society, culture, friendships and how it can become a part of our subconscious without knowing.

Thank you for sharing your story about your life and how you overcome your childhood experiences and how you navigate the world now. It really made the students question a lot about themselves and their world view.

Keep up the great work .masculinity.academy 👏🏾

Here's an illustration I created of the strengths of AuDHDrs - people who have autism, ADHD or both combined. I thought I should create it to celebrate the strengths we have.

Many times we can get caught up in the challenges of the symptoms, however not many people have these traits!

Are there any strengths you think I haven't written? Comment below đź”˝

Raw Post Alert! ⚠️

A neurodivergent person will always be expected to or raised in a way to adapt to a neurotypical world.

We learn social responses, how to 'behave' operate, adapt to school, work, relationships and different environments, push ourselves to the limit and burnout just to operate in this world but trying to manage our symptoms, get rest, plan to organise and respond in your ways. Socialising is exhausting too.

It's bloody exhausting sometimes, especially when your brain isn't designed that way. I'm thankful for still being created this way, but we get tired of it. I choose when to mask now, but when undiagnosed masking was just a way of surviving, unmasking has been relieving.

Too many people live fake in this world without reflecting on themselves. Screw your judgmental attitudes.

I respect neurodivergent people more who still live and operate and push themselves no matter what compared to the neurotypical plums who are just lazy in this world and aren't grateful for what they have.

It's not as black as white as you think it is. Don't be a prick, we may not respond in a way you perceive, imagine having to be constantly on alert and having to try to manage your internal and external environment just to live.

There comes a time where we stop caring about your responses to us. If you lived a day in our shoes, you'd probably off yourself.

We have so many strengths and quirks, but you don't know the sacrifices we make to adapt to this modern world, despite it not being designed for us.

Y'all have to perform in your world we're authentic as heck in our skin, but you don't want to accept it. You can't control us. We've already got more on our plate to operate.

If you do have someone who is neurodivergent in your family or friendship group, take some time out to understand what goes on in their world. Don't assume, ask, learn how to love them and appreciate them.

Never give up. Smile, we got this even if others don't support us. Many of us have had to raise ourselves without reliance on anyone or ever being understood by others. ❤️

The existence of special educational needs children and their support is “an existential threat”

Never thought a disabled child could be a threat to anyone…

The lack of neurodiversity awareness is unreal in ethnic & working-class communities. Many generations are left behind and neglected because they don't even know they need help or awareness on how to live aware of their symptoms and how to manage them. Raising awareness is necessary!

Here's a podcast I did with Khuram malik about Trauma, ADHD, and Autism about these topics and their impact on our communities.
