Haddock is a British staple, but our overreliance on it means we overlook brilliant alternatives landed fresh in Plymouth waters.
The ‘Big 5’ - cod, haddock, salmon, tuna, and prawns - make up roughly 80% of all seafood consumed in the UK. Leaning on them year-round puts pressure on stocks and ignores seasonality - not to mention the incredible variety caught by Plymouth’s fleet that most of us have never tried.
Haddock swaps:
🐟 Pouting - A member of the cod family with white, beautifully flaky flesh. More sustainable than haddock (it’s plentiful in British waters, fast-growing, and matures at just 2 years). Professional kitchens use it for fish fingers but it’s brilliant battered, fried or in fish pies.
🐟 Gurnard - Sweet, firm, and versatile. Brilliant baked whole, grilled, or in Mediterranean stews. High in protein and selenium. One of the most underutilised fish despite being a fisherman’s favourite.
🐟 John Dory - Premium eating with delicate, firm flesh. Perfect for pan-frying or grilling. A restaurant-quality fish that showcases the incredible quality landed at Plymouth.
Also worth trying: Pollack - another cod family member with similar texture and flavour, caught sustainably in Plymouth waters.
All are caught in Plymouth waters, landed fresh daily at the Fish Quay and available from local merchants Rex Down Wholesale Fish Merchants Ltd. Sole of Discretion RG Seafoods when they’re in season.
Fish bought this way has complete traceability - from the boat to your plate.
Ask your fishmonger what’s fresh.
