Small boats and under-10m vessels are the backbone of the UK's inshore fleet — but numbers are declining sharply.

The pressures are growing: complex regulation, limited funding access, fragile livelihoods, and too little influence in decisions that affect their future. SSIFN is emerging directly from those conversations.

It exists to unite small-scale inshore fishing communities and coastal businesses into a collective voice — one that reflects lived experience from the harbour, not just policy from afar.

Your voices will shape what SSIFN becomes.

Knowing where your fish came from, and supporting your local fishing community in the process, is firmly on the menu in 2026.

recently identified transparent seafood sourcing as one of the biggest trends in sustainable hospitality in 2026, stating “Restaurants that clearly share where, how and by whom their seafood is caught, will be ahead of the curve.” It’s a movement we’re proud to champion.

Here in Plymouth our fishermen, fishmongers and chefs have built a food culture rooted in seasonality, diversity and expert knowledge of our waters. From embracing the unpredictability of the catch to championing lesser-known species, our community proves that sustainable sourcing is most definitely in. (for 2026, yes, but we hope forever).

This year, we hope more people will get curious. Ask questions. Choose restaurants and fishmongers who know their catch and their fishermen. Support the people keeping Plymouth’s fishing tradition alive.

What’s your favourite lesser known UK species?

Since 2008, more than a fifth of the UK’s active fishing vessels have disappeared from our waters, and Plymouth has not been immune. The closure of the city’s fish market in May 2024 has added further pressure, making routes-to-market more complex and costly for local fishers and merchants.

As Gus Caslake, South West Industry Engagement Manager for Seafish, explains, while Plymouth’s fleet may appear small in a national context, its hugely important regionally - supporting jobs, skills and local economies along the coast.

Sarah Coulthard highlights the growing evidence of inshore fisheries’ value to coastal communities and their increasing recognition as part of the UK’s food security.

These boats, this fleet, this industry - they matter.

To help safeguard Plymouth’s fishing sector into the future, choosing local, fresh fish from Plymouth waters is one small action that genuinely helps keep the fleet afloat.

Every pack tells the full story… the name of the small-scale boat that caught it and the low-impact gear used to land it.

By sourcing exclusively from small boats using methods that limit damage to the marine environment, Sole of Discretion champions both the sea and the fisher.

We all know the “Big Five” (Cod, Haddock, Salmon, Tuna, Prawns). They make up about ~80% of all the seafood we eat and they’re always there for the taking in the supermarket, year-round.

While we rely on these predominantly global products, our local catch is so much more varied, transparent and traceable.

We spoke to Freddie Taylor from The Hook and Line, whose experience cooking local fish confirms that the quality and variety of our local catch is a more-than-worthy alternative for the ‘Big Five’.

The best way anyone can find a ‘new favourite’ is simply to ask your fishmonger. They are best placed to let you know what is landing fresh and tasting its absolute best right now.

“The system is broken - fish should stay local.” This is what one Plymouth resident told us in our recent survey. And they’re right.

We’re an island nation with active fishing fleets and we’re shipping in fish from distant, international sources while Plymouth boats land fresh catch daily at Sutton Harbour - which you can buy directly from the merchants at the Fish Quay.

Recent research from the University of Exeter found that ~81% of seafood eaten in the UK is imported from overseas. The average imported fish travels ~3,500km to reach a plate, while Plymouth-caught fish could be on yours in less than 24 hours, travelling a distance from sea to plate that pales in comparison to your average supermarket catch.

When you choose fish caught locally in Plymouth waters, you’re getting the freshest fish you can get your hands on, keeping money in our coastal community and dramatically cutting the environmental impact of our seafood.

Small choices make waves of impact.

Less than a month to go until our next Industry-Science Mixer in London, which is part of a wider event we are hosting with UK Women in Fisheries.

If you work in marine science, technology, and innovation, this event will connect you with women at the heart of the fishing industry. You’ll be given the opportunity to pitch your ideas and discuss innovative solutions together in an informal, social setting.

Our industry-science mixers are a great chance to connect and collaborate, with a shared aim of fostering collaborative science and technology that can be used in fisheries decision-making to build a brighter future for fishing communities and the marine environment.

If you want to take part, click this link to apply: https://loom.ly/GbhbjPs. We welcome applications from people of all genders.
