Last night was Hekate’s Deipnon, the sacred night of the Dark Moon.

In ancient times, this was the night devoted to cleansing, releasing, and honouring Hekate as Guardian of the Crossroads. Homes were swept, old energy was cleared away, and offerings were left at doorways or crossroads for Hekate and the wandering spirits who walk with her.

Deipnon is all about:
• Releasing negativity and stagnant energy
• Spiritual cleansing and uncrossing
• Letting go of what no longer serves you
• Preparing your path for the new lunar cycle

Traditional offerings included eggs, garlic, onions, honey cakes, bread, and wine, left at a threshold or crossroads and never taken back inside.

I’ve been thinking about how I came to have three familiars, each finding me in their own magickal way.

My first was Hecate, my beautiful cat. I’d wanted another cat for six years after losing my dear cat Tilly that loss broke my heart in ways I didn’t expect. Then one day, out of the blue, I got a call asking if I wanted to take in a cat who desperately needed a home. She arrived in a dirty box with a smelly towel, skinny and shy. But when we looked at each other… it was like two magnets snapping together. Something clicked. She can be out all day or night, but the second magick starts happening…there she is, watching over it all.

My second familiar is Matilda, the magpie. For months, a single magpie visited me every day at the same time without fail. I felt there was something special about her, so I did a spell asking her to be my familiar. Ever since, she’s given me signs and warnings that have never failed me.

Then came Elektra, my 7-month-old kitten! The trickiest and most chaotic of the three. She’s like a tiny storm wrapped in fur. She destroys things, tests my patience, and yet when she curls up on my lap and looks at me with those golden eyes… it’s like she sees straight into my soul. She feels like what I’d be if I were a cat! Beautiful, destructive chaos with purpose.

Each of them helps me in their own way, and together they make the perfect trio of energy, balance, and magick.
