Following feedback from Environmental Health two weeks ago, we identified gaps in a client’s existing safety package that should have been in place from the outset. Off the back of that, we’ve spent over 20 hours reworking and upgrading their system — all completed free of charge.

The client now has a brand-new, fully functional digital safety system, with the missing elements fully incorporated and working in practice. We also supplied the required equipment at no cost, so everything could be implemented immediately and correctly.

This is exactly why all clients receive 12 months of ongoing safety support as standard. It allows us to review, correct, improve, and fully support businesses when issues are identified — whether that’s through inspections, enforcement feedback, or changes in guidance.

After the first 12 months:
• £250 per year for small, low-risk businesses
• £500 per year for larger or higher-risk businesses (including site visits and full reviews)

Yesterday we were instructed following an accident involving a client’s staff member on site. During the early stages, there were attempts by the Principal Contractor to shift liability under CDM arrangements, which made it even more important that the investigation was done properly, independently, and based on facts rather than assumptions.

Lewis Jackson Safety carried out a full Kelvin TOP-SET incident investigation on site. Visual storyboard panels were built live on the wall and used to work through the incident with the injured person, witnesses, supervisors, and management. This approach allowed everyone involved to see the same information, challenge assumptions, and ensure the sequence of events, conditions, and decisions were accurately captured.

Following the investigation, the client was issued with a comprehensive written report, along with an Excel version of the exact storyboard used during the investigation. This ensured there was no ambiguity, no reinterpretation later, and clear evidence that a structured, factual investigation had taken place.

Correct incident investigations are not about blame — they protect businesses when something goes wrong. They provide defensible evidence for clients, contractors, insurers, and enforcing authorities, and they demonstrate compliance with the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 by showing that incidents are reviewed, lessons are learned, and controls are improved to prevent recurrence.

Because the reality is simple: even well-managed, well-run companies still experience accidents. What matters is how you respond when they happen.

RPE Only Protects You If It Fits Properly

Silica dust is one of the most dangerous hazards in construction and maintenance work. It’s created during everyday tasks such as cutting, drilling, grinding or breaking materials like concrete, bricks, blocks, stone and mortar. The dust is often invisible, easily inhaled, and repeated exposure can cause serious and irreversible illnesses including silicosis, COPD and lung cancer.

Simply wearing a mask isn’t enough. If a tight-fitting mask doesn’t seal correctly to the face, harmful dust will leak past the filter and straight into the lungs, giving a false sense of protection.

That’s where face fit testing comes in. I provide qualitative face fit testing using the hood and test spray, suitable for disposable and half-mask RPE. This confirms the mask fits the individual correctly and meets legal requirements where tight-fitting RPE is used.

Lewis Jackson Safety offers on-site face fit testing with certification provided, helping businesses stay compliant while protecting workers’ long-term health.
