Personal question, but, how often do you stretch your groin?! 🤨
These guys are also important if you want that 360 degree functionality we were talking about. Here are a few options of active and passive stretches to try:

✅Active version of this pose taken from yoga asana Supta Padangustasana 2 using the strength of the inner hip muscles
✅Passive version of the same stretch using hands or a belt
✅Seated crossed legged, lift your knees & hook your arms around them, then create resistance by pressing legs into arms and arms back into outside of the legs - strength in lengthened position 👍
✅Frog pose - drive the legs into the ground and squeeze side bum
✅Passive butterfly, lying down, soles of feet together, knees bent. Use blocks under the upper legs so you feel supported - and chill!

This week in class we’ve been focusing on very simply, getting up off the ground! I love this kind of movement, that has a purpose and function!

Crazy how quickly we lose this ability, definitely one I need to work on after so many years sitting at a desk 8 hours a day.

I’m progressing from using hand support, to no hands, to adding a squat (with difficultly 😆) You could try with a bolster under the hips to make a little easier.

Summer has come to the U.K ☀️ At least for a few days? Someone in my class told me the other day that the U.K. weather is the most envied in the world..which sounds ridiculous esp if you’re a Brit, but as I’m getting older & wrinklier I’m realising there’s a lot to be said for ‘not too little, not too much’ - whether that’s rain or sun or chocolate or exercise or work or xyz.

Anyway, if you want to practise or train with me ‘not too little not too much’ this week, I’ll be in these places:

Sometimes all the cueing in a Yoga class can be confusing!

When in doubt, here are 3 simple questions that can help you with almost any (if not all!) yoga pose…whether you’re in Bali or you’re in Blighty like me right now!

🌳 Am I rooting through my contract points with the floor?

🧘‍♀️ Do feel a sense of tailbone to crown connection?

🫁 Am I breathing?

There are many different access points into Yoga and while I’m definitely no expert on anatomy, I have found it to be a route into the practise that resonates. I think that’s possibly because my brain likes structure and reason (as a contrast to the internal chaos!) and studying anatomy kind of gives you that.

I don’t mean to sound reductionist - Yoga is not about the poses or what we look like in the poses. It’s not about the positioning of your feet in Warrior 2 or your ability to do a handstand or whatever. The asana practise is a practise of being in my body, feeling into the sensory realm of being & away from doing, paying attention to what I feel & being responsive to that..knowing when to go deeper towards sensation & when to pull back from it.

I’m not saying we need to study anatomy in order to do that. But the more I learn about the muscles, the bones, the nervous system and how it all works together, the more I appreciate just how amazing it is to have a body & the more joyful I feel about my practise - and the more creative I can be with the poses, making them fit my body, rather than the other way around. And having a better understanding of how the body works rather than just rote learning a bunch of queues for a pose, the more I feel I can help others to find safely find their unique expression of each pose too 🧘‍♀️
