If you're due for a blood test and you begin to feel lightheaded and are worried you might faint, practising applied tension could help to regulate your blood pressure to avoid fainting. How to practise ‘applied tension’:

Sit comfortably.
Tense the muscles in your arms, upper body and legs for 10 to 15 seconds until you feel warmth rising to your face.
Relax your muscles for 30 seconds.
After 30 seconds, repeat the tensing exercise until you feel the warmth in your face again.
Repeat the exercise five times.

Do you have a phobia of needles? You're not alone! 75% of the population admit to being afraid of needles and 1 in 10 of us are truly needle phobic, which can cause fainting or feeling faint.

This reaction is caused by a rapid rise in heart rate and blood pressure, which drops quickly which can lead to fainting.

It's important to let your healthcare provider know about your dislike of needles before getting treatment, so that they can best manage your experience.

The best techniques for minimising the effects of your needle phobia may be breathing techniques, which can help slow heart rate, or distraction techniques.
