For the past few months, I’ve been dedicated to developing a new way to support people living with dementia—one that transforms how we understand and respond to distressed behaviour. When I co-founded PACT, it became clear that the demand for behavioural expertise far outweighed the available support. As one of only around 80 registered Board Certified Behaviour Analysts worldwide specialising in dementia care, I knew there had to be a way to bridge this gap.

That’s why I’ve been building Less Distress, by emwillcare (https://www.emwillcare.com)—a digital tool that brings behavioural science directly to caregivers, helping predict and reduce distress before it escalates. Rather than reacting after behaviours occur, we help carers understand why they happen, and proactively alert them—so they can step in sooner, prevent crises, and improve quality of life.

This work is now gaining real momentum. After securing a place on the Business Wales / Busnes Cymru Accelerator Growth Programme last year, I’m proud to have been recently selected for a place on the highly competitive Alzheimer's Society’s Launchpad Programme—an initiative designed to support the most promising innovations in dementia care.

While it’s early days yet on our journey, we recently kicked off with a bang at our first in-person event in Leeds where we showcased Less Distress and emwillcare to a wide variety of people and businesses. I look forward to bringing you exciting information from this innovative development in dementia care!

BCBAs: Antipsychotics Aren’t the Answer—Behaviour Analysis Is

Antipsychotic medications are overprescribed in dementia care, despite their severe risks—falls, strokes, worsened cognition, and increased mortality. Yet distressed behaviour is rarely a medical issue; it’s a communication of unmet needs.

As one of the few BCBAs specialising in dementia care, PACT's DR Emma has spent her career proving that behaviour analysis can reduce antipsychotic use while improving quality of life. Her approach?

✔️ Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA) to uncover the real triggers of distress
✔️ Proactive strategies to prevent agitation before it starts
✔️ Ethical, evidence-based interventions that reduce medication reliance

Dr Emma has developed a specialist course (worth 1 CEU) to equip BCBAs with the skills to replace medication with meaningful behaviour support.

For too long, distressed behaviour in dementia care has been managed rather than understood. Antipsychotics, restraint, or reactive approaches might seem like the only options—but they’re not!

🔍 Distressed behaviours aren’t random! They are a form of communication. When we understand why they happen, we can prevent them before they even begin. That’s where behavioural science comes in.

💡In an exciting initiative to embed specialised behavioural services across North Wales, carers from BCUHB are now accessing a range of specialist training courses that PACT’s Dr Emma Williams developed to bridge the behavioural gap in dementia care—giving carers the tools to understand behaviour, reduce distress, and improve quality of life for the people they support.

✨This is the kind of knowledge that changes everything. Not just for people living with dementia, but for the carers supporting them every day.

➡️ If you’re a carer who wants to feel more confident in managing behaviours, or if you have staff who would benefit from these essential skills, you can find the courses here:
