Another little mindful moment in celebration of World Mental Health Day this Sunday. Take a minute out of your day to "full screen" this video and enjoy a little brain break.
Re-thinking PORTION SIZE: eating a little bit of something you love is more pleasurable than eating loads of it.
According to Pierre Chandon, the overall enjoyment we get from eating something is not the SUM of the enjoyment that you take from each bite, but the AVERAGE. Sometimes, even just the last bite determines how much we enjoy something.
Think about it: the first bite you take of a food you love is heavenly. The next bite is a little less so, and on and on. The final bite can sometimes taste bland or leave you feeling stuffed, and not in a good way.
I totally get this. When I start eating something I love, it’s fab. After a couple of bites, unless I’m eating very mindfully, I’m not really thinking about it anymore. If I’d just had a couple of bites, the pleasure I would have taken, on average, from eating that food would be very high. If I’d just kept on eating, for the sake of it, the average pleasure I would have taken from it would have decreased over time.
What an interesting, and very simple, idea to bear in mind when selecting what to eat!

There’s a phenomenon called Negativity Bias which I think this quote demonstrates really well:
“The brain is like Velcro for negative experiences but Teflon for positive ones.” — Rick Hanson
Unfortunately, the human brain has a built-in alarm system to perceive negativity even when a situation is positive or neutral. There are lots of theories behind why this might be. Check out Dr. Barbara Fredrickson’s work on this - it’s really interesting. Basically, it takes three positive experiences to offset one negative experience. For every negative emotional experience you endure, you need to experience at least three positive emotional experiences to uplift you.
We’re such a complicated lot, us humans.
Taking pleasure in the tiniest of things will help you recognise other tiny things in your life to be grateful for. They don’t have to be big things but start to recognise the positive experiences you have and see how they really do outweigh the negative ones. Even though we’re wired to remember the negative experiences, try to focus on the positives. Check out my posts from the last week on gratitude journaling and use the prompts to reflect on the positives.
We WILL get through this! ###

GRATITUDE PRACTISE, DAY 7
We’ve done a full week of gratitude practise now. Some people say it takes 21 days to form a habit so try and do this for another couple of weeks to really get into the habit. Go back to Day 1 tomorrow and circle around. I hope these prompts have helped someone out there start seeing the positives in their life, be they big or really, really tiny!
Today’s prompts:
-> Something I was happy about today:
-> Something good I saw someone do today:
-> Something I did well today:
Remember, these can be tiny things. Maybe you just made a cup of tea really well! That’s GREAT! Remember to look for the little things you do tomorrow that you do really well, too.
Remember gratitude practise makes gratitude perfect!

GRATITUDE PRACTISE, DAY 6
As you start to get into practising gratitude, you may start behaving in ways that will lead to more positivity in your life. For instance, one of today’s prompts is, “Something about today I’ll always want to remember.” Try to go out of your way today to do something that you’ll always want to remember. For instance, get outside and look for something tiny but remarkable like a beautiful bird or a new walking route. Or go and buy a postcard to send to a friend and simply write, “Thinking of you” so that when they get it, and get in contact with you, you’ll remember your trip to the post office to send it.
It’s about finding the tiny things throughout the day to be grateful for; finding positivity in the smallest of details.
Today’s prompts:
-> Something about today I’ll always want to remember:
-> Something funny that happened today:
-> My favourite part of today:
These things don’t have to be big. Maybe your favourite part of the day was getting into bed with your hot water bottle. Appreciate the tiny moments throughout your day and you’ll soon start seeing the positives.

GRATITUDE PRACTISE, DAY 5
If you’re feeling disconnected from the world right now, a text message or some other nugget of contact with a friend, no matter how far away, can mean the world.
If you know of someone that’s spending Lockdown on their own, shoot them a little message to let them know someone in the world is thinking of them. Recall a special memory you share or just let them know you were thinking of them. They’ll be able to write about you in their gratitude journal this evening!
Today’s prompts:
-> Someone I was thankful for today:
-> Something interesting that happened today:
-> Today I had fun when:
Maybe you watched something interesting on the TV or heard something interesting on the radio. Write about that if you didn’t actually DO anything interesting.
Maybe today wasn’t too much fun...but maybe you watched something “fun” on the TV.
It’s about finding the tiniest things to be grateful for today and searching for these tiny things tomorrow.
Feel free to post in the Comments below or just think about/write about these at home.

GRATITUDE PRACTISE, DAY 4
If you’re struggling to find moments in your day to be grateful for, think about things that have happened in your past which you can write about in today’s gratitude practise. Know that this sh*tty situation is temporary and we will emerge on the other side. Maybe today wasn’t very special. Think of a day that was special and know that you will have more days like that.
Today’s prompts:
-> Today was special because:
-> Today I was proud of myself because:
-> One good thing that happened to me today:
Feel free to post in the Comments below or just think about/write about these at home.

GRATITUDE PRACTISE, DAY 3
By reflecting on your day and finding the tiny things to be thankful for, you will start to develop a habit. Each day, you will start to “collect” tiny things to think about/write about during your gratitude practise in the evening. One of today’s prompts is, “Today I smiled when…” You might not be able to think of a time you smiled today but tomorrow, you’ll store that moment when you smiled in your “gratitude bank” to reflect on later.
Today’s prompts:
-> Today I smiled when:
-> Something I was thankful for today:
-> Something about today I’ll always want to remember:

I believe in the power of a plant-based diet for long-term health, prevention of, and cure from, disease.
Let me show you how becoming vegetarian (or even vegan) needn’t be difficult. In fact, it can be easy and enjoyable and opens up a whole new world of delicious food you might never have thought to try before!
Using the same steps I now teach, I went from being stressed out, lacking in energy and fearful of developing the cancer that runs in my family to becoming an energetic, healthy, Registered Holistic Nutritionist who teaches others the benefits of a plant-based diet.
I use, and teach others to use, practices such as mindfulness for stress-reduction and Neuro Linguistic Programming for goal setting and achievement.
