Vaccines continue to be the most effective way to protect people from serious, life-threatening diseases. Thanks to vaccines, diseases like smallpox, polio, and tetanus, that were once responsible for millions of deaths and disabilities, have been eliminated or drastically reduced.

The shingles vaccine is being offered to more people to help protect them at an earlier age. NHS Scotland can’t do this all at once, so it needs to be rolled out over 10 years.

All those eligible will have been contacted with details of their appointment or how to make an appointment. If you are unable to make your appointment please contact our Service Delivery Centre on 0800 032 0339 to reschedule.

Check if you’re eligible for the shingles vaccine at nhsinform.scot/shingles

🤔Confused about where to go when you or a loved one needs medical help?
It can be tricky to know where to get advice when you are ill or in pain, and choosing the wrong service can mean longer waits, more stress, and extra pressure on our NHS.

✅ This guide can help you make the right choice, quickly, safely and as close to home as possible.

Well, we are half way through our challenge and we have smashed our initial target of getting to Paris (1496km) by already walking a massive 1642km in just two weeks! Obviously we can't stop there, so we're continuing the steps with the aim of getting to Positano in Southern Italy - Portree to Positano has a pretty good ring to it!

Your donations are continuing to spur us on with our Just Giving page now at a staggering £2067 for the Scotland's Charity Air Ambulance - SCAA (this does not include the generous cash donations that have been made at the surgery). Thank you all for your kindness, it really is what keeps us moving!

There is still time to donate, either electronically through Just Giving at https://www.justgiving.com/page/portree-medical-centre-2?utm_medium=FR&utm_source=CL&utm_campaign=020 or in cash at the front desk at the Medical Centre.

CPR moments stay with people. They can be intense, emotional, and hard to forget, whether you stepped in to give CPR or watched someone else do it. Those memories can linger for a long time, and it’s completely normal to feel that way.

Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland offers a free, confidential Advice Line where trained healthcare professionals are ready to listen, support you, and help you make sense of what happened. You don’t have to work through those feelings on your own.

The team are off to an amazing start on our walk from Portree to Paris in aid of the Scottish Charity Air Ambulance. In the first week, up to 7th February, we walked a staggering 835km and are well on our way, as you can see from the map!

We have also already raised an incredible £1212 on our Just Giving page, so thank you to everyone who has donated so far. The efforts of the team deserve another push on our fundraising page so if you are able to donate, please do by following the link below.

The MMR (measles, mumps rubella) vaccine was recently combined with varicella to make the MMRV vaccine, which also protects against chickenpox. It's now offered routinely to children in Scotland at 12-13mos and 18mos immunisation appointments.

The MMRV vaccine was introduced as part of the routine childhood immunisation schedule from 1 January 2026 across the UK.

When children are vaccinated, it helps to protect the health of the whole community. When enough people are vaccinated, it’s more difficult for serious diseases to spread to those who are not vaccinated.

Parents should look out for a letter from their local immunisation team about your child's vaccination appointment.

Read more about the changes to the childhood vaccination schedule in our latest blog here: https://publichealthscotland.scot/.../protection-against.../
