Loneliness doesn’t necessarily come from not having people around you.

I’ve been struck by a Carl Jung quote this week that states that while we can have people around us we can still feel lonely. This comes out of the inability to communicate how we feel and as a result feel disconnected from those around us.

It’s so important to be able to speak freely with those we love and care about and if we can’t get support to be able to or examine whether the relationships we have are good for us.

I saw this so often in my background working in schools. Kids were surrounded by other kids but so lonely because they couldn’t express themselves.

Deep breath. Grief can be devastating. Time consuming, emotional and draining. I have found music to have a really releasing effect over the stored emotions surrounding the grieving process.

I’m sharing five of my favorite songs to grieve to. Favourite might be an odd word but I truly believe when in grief it is important to relate to your grief, even welcome it in and actively listening to songs that will bring about emotion or help you grieve is inviting in the part of you that is still sad they are gone.

I hope this helps you grieve if you are going through this difficult process.

Take a grief day!

Losing someone is always a shock to the system and can be lost beneath paperwork, life, supporting others, inheritance, conflict and more.

As a therapist I’ve always found taking a day to grieve, doing something just focused on my own relationship with the grief, with the person, with our relationship very healing.

The Critical Thoughts Beach Ball.

I read about a new process called the Beach Ball idea which references the idea of negative or critical thoughts and how if we try to suppress them they tend to come back stronger.

Instead the thoughts are allowed to exist, we don’t have to control them and can just leave them to exist and notice them but not feel the need to suppress and control them.

Do therapists see therapists?

Yes it is good practice for therapists to see another therapist throughout their careers. It helps with looking after their wellbeing which is so crucial to the support of their clients.

Therapy notes are a challenge. Each session must be written out and I’m only really accountable to myself. It’s a nice feeling when they are all done for the year!

In therapy crying happens a lot. A lot of people apologize and reach straight for the tissues. People can feel embarrassed or ashamed.

This couldn’t be further from my experience as the therapist. I feel connected and honored. Someone allowing themselves to cry and release sometimes years of stored up emotion is such a privilege to work with.

You never need to apologize for crying in this room.
