Trauma is how the body responds to a traumatic experience. I often find people diminish their traumatic experiences and say ‘people have had it worse than me’. Trauma can be an accumulation of smaller experiences, not just the bigger obvious ones, often linked to ‘relational trauma’, our early familiy relationships or adult partners.

Whatever our traumatic experiences are, they are held in the body as impressions, and the mind as a narrative and visual memory. It is part of a primitive survival response to keep us alive, however, in our modern world this primal survival response can cause a myriad of mental, emotional and physical difficulties.

Gaining a deeper understanding of our experience and the impact it has had on our nervous system can support us to gain back some control for our wellbeing.

When childhood needs are not fully met it can lead to the development of certain behaviours such as:

People pleasing
The ‘good girl’
Overachieving or perfectionism
Caretaking or rescuing
The ‘quiet’ kid

These behaviours are likely to carry on through to adulthood, and are fuelled with deep rooted beliefs of ‘not good enough’. The goal of the behaviours is to seek and maintain connection with others, and avoid a sense of not enough, not mattering, failure, less than, insignificant, rejection and more. Connection is an essential survival need. Overtime, dependence on these behaviours for mainting connection and safety can lead to fear, anxiety, depression, and discomfort as we have often lost touch with who we truly are whilst trying to fulfil unmet needs through seeking validation from others.

Counselling can support you to gain clarity when everything feels overwhelming. It can help a person to understand what is going on for them by slowing everything down during the sessions, to explore and understand more deeply whatever is going on within in a safe and non-judgmental space.

Anxiety is not your enemy, it is a survival response in the body activated by fear. Anxiety is hardwired into our nervous system, it is a primitive survival response, that struggles in our modern day world. Not only does anxiety respond to real events that happen in the moment, it can also be activated by our sensory input that can trigger older experiences that have left impression in the body, or by imagining events in the future, this is our ‘what if’s’ and ‘worst case scenarios’. These type of thoughts are the evolved human minds attempt to resolve a primitive survival response to a threat that may or may not be there. There are many factors that can be the root cause of anxiety such as:
Trauma
Relationships
Self-limiting beliefs. Eg: not good enough, failure, unlovable
Worrying
Judgement, criticism and shame
Fear
Stress and pressure to meet expectations
That’s just to name a few!

If you are struggling with anxiety, you do not have to struggle alone. Anxiety can be managed with the right knowledge and understanding of how this survival response is showing up for you. With the right tools, techniques and understanding you can take back control. If you would like a free 30 minute chat about how working with me can support you, Please visit me at:

Anxiety can be managed to improve day to day life. Anxiety is a word that is used often by many, but how many people truly understand what anxiety is? We know how it feels, we know how debilitating it can be and how it can interfere with daily life, but not many people understand their anxiety, which means it can’t be managed effectively.

Anxiety is a physiological experience in the body’s nervous system, it is a survival response in the body when we feel under threat, afraid, challenged or stressed. It responds to our environment and it responds to our own thoughts, such as worries, negative self-talk or beliefs about ourselves and the world around us. It can leave us feeling out of control.

Anxiety can be managed, to improve the quality of day to day life. If you would like to understand your anxiety, together we can go on a journey to discover how your anxiety started, the triggers that activate your anxiety, your narrative around your experiences and to learn new coping strategies to support the reduction and management of anxiety.

I offer a free 30 minute chat, to give you the opportunity to gain a sense of whether counselling with me feels like the right step for you. Please get in touch:

How often have you been told your ‘too sensitive, too emotional, to this or too that’

I hear this so often with my clients and hearing this over and over again can be damaging to our mental & emotional health and well-being. It can result in self-doubt, self-loathing, a sense there is something wrong with you, flawed, not good enough and so on.

The truth is some of us are just wired too feel more deeply, and we have not been given the opportunity to understand ourselves, to learn to be kind to ourselves and self-regulate. Instead we have been told ‘ we are too much’ creating a sense of shame within us.

If you feel this has impacted you and would like to understand yourself in a new way to improve your wellbeing than please get in touch to arrange a free 30 minute chat to see if counselling with me is the right step.

Counselling is a space for a person to work towards self-healing the emotional wounds that can reside within us. I hear many people say they feel like a failure, not good enough and even broken, and my response is always the same....

‘We are not broken, we feel deep hurt in some way and it is causing us extreme emotional, mental and physical pain, that we don’t know how to heal yet’

Counselling is a journey that we do together, to explore that pain that has been causing so much discomfort within, only when we understand the source of that pain can we begin to heal the wound’
