Trauma is how the body responds to a traumatic experience. I often find people diminish their traumatic experiences and say ‘people have had it worse than me’. Trauma can be an accumulation of smaller experiences, not just the bigger obvious ones, often linked to ‘relational trauma’, our early familiy relationships or adult partners.
Whatever our traumatic experiences are, they are held in the body as impressions, and the mind as a narrative and visual memory. It is part of a primitive survival response to keep us alive, however, in our modern world this primal survival response can cause a myriad of mental, emotional and physical difficulties.
Gaining a deeper understanding of our experience and the impact it has had on our nervous system can support us to gain back some control for our wellbeing.
