If you think your ears are blocked, try not to leave it too long to book in for wax removal. There are early signs of a build up of wax in your ears to look out for.
For example, if your ears are frequently blocking and then unblocking, this can be due to the wax moving around in there.
You may also notice that when you get water in your ears, it takes longer to clear out - water can easily find its way into the ear canals through gaps in wax, but its harder for it to drain back out.
You may wake in the morning with blocked ears, and it clears through the morning as the wax moves around again.
At this stage, if you poke your finger in your ear, or push a cotton bud in, this just pushes the wax together and makes it one big plug of wax, and often pushes it deeper into the ear. At this stage, it causes more hearing difficulties, more discomfort, and is less likely to be resolved by self-management with wax softener drops. It also makes it harder to remove the wax by microsuction - the deeper part of your ear canal is much more sensitive, and the wax can often be a denser, harder wax to remove.
