“What’s the point of reading to a baby who can’t understand you?”
Here’s the point: it matters more than you think.
Reading to babies helps build strong language skills and supports later success in school. Even before they can talk, they’re learning through your voice, expressions and interaction—things like repeating words, pausing and using an expressive tone all help develop communication.
It’s also a special bonding time, creating closeness while introducing sounds, rhythms and early words.
Mixing up when, where and who reads to them helps too—different environments and voices strengthen their understanding of language and social cues. Letting babies explore books on their own also builds curiosity and a positive connection to reading.
Over time, you’re not just teaching skills—you’re helping raise a child who loves reading!
