BEWARE OF UNSCRUPULOUS “HEALERS” WHO CAN CAUSE GREAT DISTRESS
I was saddened, and shocked, by a post yesterday on the page of Healers and Holistic Therapists Network Group. It read as follows:
“I know that amongst the genuine healers there is the occasional charlatan, so I hope I don’t come to regret this post. I am very seriously ill and need to find a genuine healer.
“Over the past year I have had a huge amount of the limited time I have left on Earth wasted by charlatans. I saved up over a period of weeks from my pension to pay one guy. Once he had the money, I heard no more from him.
“Don’t these people realise that whilst they are wasting my time, this disease is rampaging through me. They are using up valuable time which should have been put to fighting back against the illness.
“Some have called themselves shaman. In reality, they are not and have just adopted the title because they think it’s a new age trendy word or have done a weekend course and think that makes them a healer.
“Other workers I have connected to have been very good-hearted genuine people, but have lacked the ability to carry out the healing I need. Some have been wonderful and helped with other problems but have not been able to help with my physical condition.”
I have offered to see the lady concerned free of charge because sadly, it’s another example of a vulnerable person falling prey to unscrupulous “healers” in the absence of standards, controls and legislation. Whilst there are dozens of healing organisations with varying standards in Britain, the fact remains that anyone can establish themselves as a healer regardless of their knowledge or experience - or whether they are a member of a legitimate organisation.
There is also a growing trend for these people to offer other services - whether it’s readings, teachings, spiritual insights, or workshops. Healers carry a huge responsibility because particularly vulnerable people are often attracted.
I met someone not long ago who told me about antipsychotic medication they were taking that often caused them to hallucinate. Without declaring this, they had no hesitation in giving readings and advertising themselves as a healer. In many other professions this may not be an issue but if you’re working with vulnerable, frightened, or sick people, it most certainly is. Until some form of protective legislation is introduced, this will very sadly continue to be a problem.
When looking for a tradesman or a service we rely on recommendations and feedback from previous customers. My advice is to also do this when looking for a healer - the greater the number of reviews they have, the better and more professional and responsible they will probably be.
