What is it and why does it matter?

Visceral fat is found deep in the abdomen. It surrounds and protects your vital organs.
🍏
The soft fat that you can feel on your belly and under the skin all over your body is subcutaneous fat.
🍏
You can't feel visceral fat as it sits under the abdominal muscles.
🍏
Too much visceral fat increases the risk of health problems
such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance & is a common weight loss barrier.
🍏
Visceral fat is metabolically active and changes the way that the body works to create energy and keep your body functioning.
🍏
As we get older, fat distribution on the body tends to shift to the abdomen especially if we have a stressful life, eat processed foods,have poor gut health and are not sufficiently active.
🍏
Even people who have a normal BMI and are not overweight can still have raised visceral fat.
🍏
Monitoring visceral fat is crucial for assessing health risks.
🍏
A rough guide is to check waist circumference for men < 94cm and for women < 80cm.
🍏
During Metabolic Balance we monitor visceral fat using the Tanita Body Composition Scales.

With three months to go until I head off to a yoga retreat in the sun - just enough time to fit in my 12 Week Metabolic Balance programme.

It’s been 3 years since I last did the programme and now that I am teaching it again I want to go through it myself and come up with some new recipes and meal ideas.

We tend to eat mostly vegan these days which is not compatible with Metabolic Balance but I can still keep meat/fish to a minimum.

Want to join me?

My aim is to let go of some weight and tone up my metabolism.

I’m looking forward to wearing a couple of dresses that have been feeling a little tight lately 🤣

METABOLISM & MITOCHONDRIA

Pictures of mitochondria always take me back to my schooldays!

They are the powerhouse of the cell creating energy in the body from the food we eat and the air we breathe.

We have trillions of cells in our bodies and inside all of them (except red blood cells) are hundreds of mitochondria.

As we get older our mitochondria tend to decline. They are sensitive and easily damaged by things like stress, inflammation, smoking, toxins in the diet, processed food and sugar.

When your mitochondria are not working efficiently your metabolism isn’t working efficiently.

The good news is that we know a lot more about the mitochondria now and how to support and improve mitochondrial function and therefore metabolism and health.

We are going to be talking more about mitochondria and metabolism over on my private FB group ‘Mind, Body and Metabolic Balance’ as I am relaunching the Metabolic Balance® programme in my practice in June.

So often it’s the small things done every day that make the biggest difference.

I always think that first few minutes after you wake up is such precious time.

Time to prepare your mind and body for the day ahead.

Your body is busy digesting food, repairing and regenerating overnight so morning is a good time to encourage your body to get your elimination systems in flow!

Do you remember being in your 20s and thinking that anyone over fifty was really old?

What beliefs must we have created about ageing from that thought?

How have the people in your life aged? What was their story and how might it have influenced you?

When people come to see me they have already made the decision to change, to upgrade their health, release excess weight … but those subconscious patterns and beliefs can sabotage the best intentions and stop you from getting the long term improvement that you desire.

Experimented for lunch today with whipped cashew cream on my avocado and toast.

I’m not vegan but I do prefer to eat plant based most of the time.

I listen to my body and try to eat intuitively as much as possible.

Even looking through my Qualified Nutritional Therapist lens the food research can sometimes be conflicting.

And we are all different anyway. So I wholeheartedly believe in personalised nutrition. There are tests and programmes that can help.

One of the best I have worked with is Metabolic Balance - for reducing inflammation and releasing extra weight.

My ultimate goal though is to help clients connect back with themselves and listen to their body. I believe this is so important whether they are looking to resolve any aspect of health - mental, physical or emotional.

That’s where the mind and energy work can make a big difference.

Back to the cashew cream though - it was much tastier even than I expected. I made it up as I went along and I don’t know quantities but it included cashews, lemon juice, coconut milk, sea salt, black pepper and a little nutritional yeast.

Very excited to be offering small group Quantum Flow classes at the stunning new Soul Barns in Mortimer Common.

Classes are on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 8am from May 2nd. The perfect time to get into flow for the day!

It’s a fabulous wellness centre with lovely energy and a great variety of classes.

I tried Yoga Barre at the launch on Sunday and my thighs are still reminding me! I loved it.

Also the Sound Bath was amazing.

Excited to be offering Quantum Flow live in person (rather than Zoom) in small groups - starting in May - for anyone close to Reading.

Classes will be early morning to start the day in optimal flow!
