Stressed about Christmas? I know a lot of us are or will be. If I can borrow your attention for just 1 minute, I want you to think back on your happiest Christmas/Christmases and let those memories flood back. Now try to remember what gifts you got, and ask yourself, is that why you were happy?
I'm by no means suggesting we get rid of gifts- BUT we can afford ourselves a little less stress and a little more mindfulness, balance and connecting with what I see as the true points of Christmas; shared joy, connection, generosity, love and magic ✨
So here are some mindful ideas to get you started (backed by Neuroscience!):
1️⃣ Cultivate a mindset of gratitude
• Keep and/or gift a gratitude journal
• Express thanks: Write thank-you notes or letters to people who have positively impacted your life.
I sent text messages for 1 month like this, and it was an amazing experience!
• Practice gratitude visits: Read a gratitude letter aloud to someone who has made a difference to you.
• Remind yourself of your own abundance: Reflect on what you have and then share it. Regift things!
2️⃣Perform acts of kindness
•Perform random acts of kindness: Give compliments, let someone go ahead of you in a queue, or pay for the coffee of the customer after you.
• Offer practical help: Run errands for a neighbor or walk a friend's dog etc
• Be a good listener: Offer a listening ear to a friend or colleague who is having a bad day.
•Give to your community: Volunteer your time, donate to a charity, or pick up litter in your neighborhood.
Spread small acts of positivity: Leave uplifting notes in public places, say hello to a passerby etc.
3️⃣Engage in mindful giving
•Give freely without expectation: Offer kindness, attention, and care without expecting anything in return.
•Focus on the act of giving: Remember that generosity can activate neurochemicals in the brain that boost happiness
• Check up on others: Reach out to a lonely friend, family member, or neighbour to see how they are doing.
• Share your skills: Offer to teach a friend a new recipe, a skill!
