On Sunday, 7 September at 3 pm, there will be a national emergency phone alert test.
This test is aimed at helping us, but it could mean danger for people experiencing domestic abuse and confusion for other people.
We are sharing guidance for people experiencing domestic abuse or who may find the alert confusing.
Please watch and share these short videos from Refuge showing how to turn off alerts on a hidden phone. It takes just a minute - but it could save someone’s life.
Please note that the video sound will come on as soon as you click the link. Each video lasts one minute and 30 seconds.
Turn off the alerts on your iPhone.

For deaf, hard-of-hearing, blind or partially sighted people: during the test, audio and vibration attention signals will let you know you have received an alert if accessibility notifications have been enabled on your mobile phone or tablet.

TODAY IS NATIONAL THOUGHTFUL DAY!
Thoughtfulness isn’t just a kind gesture — it changes the brain. Studies show that practising gratitude boosts mood, lowers stress, and strengthens our relationships. On National Thoughtful Day, even the smallest act — a kind word, a pause to listen, a note of thanks — can spark positive ripples for you and those around you.
reember:
✨ “A little gratitude lights up the brain — and the world around you.”
💫 “Thoughtfulness is contagious: one gesture can brighten a whole day.”

CELEBRATING INTERNATIONAL CAT DAY
Here at Community Connections we are all very fond of our feline - and canine - companions...
Cats aren’t just cute companions—they’re tiny, furry therapists. 🐾 Spending time with a cat can help reduce stress, ease feelings of loneliness, and bring a sense of calm to even the busiest mind. Their soothing purrs, playful antics, and unconditional affection can lift your mood and make each day feel a little brighter. Whether it’s curling up together on the sofa or sharing a quiet moment, cats have a special way of helping us feel grounded, loved, and less alone.

This is the personal story of Jacob, one of our volunteers and someone we previously supported:

"The course of my life has been dictated by episodes of poor mental health. For as long as I can remember, I’ve struggled with anxiety, confidence, my mood, forming and maintaining relationships, and coping with the day-to-day stresses of home and work life.

"In my teens and early adulthood, that developed into self-injury, suicidality and substance use. I’ve had hospital admissions, spent time in care and seen more psychologists and psychiatrists than I care to remember! You could say that I’ve been ‘in the system’ for most of my life.

"Among the referrals and interventions, I’ve had, Waythrough stands out by a mile. I became a client about a year into my recovery, when I was out of work and searching for things to keep me occupied and give me some purpose. From my first appointment, the warmth and inclusivity I experienced stood out. I started by going to support and activity groups, then became a volunteer – I was honoured and daunted to be trusted with the responsibility of representing Waythrough!

"There have been points in my journey where I’ve had mental health and substance use needs at the same time. I’ve always been baffled by the way these are so often siloed and addressed separately, and that one can pose a barrier to accessing care for the other. In the town where I live, there’s a centre where drug and alcohol care is provided in the same building as mental health support – by two different services. Do we always need two sets of referrals and appointments? Why not join forces?

"Today, I’m still ‘in the system’, but in a different way. Being a part of lived experience has given me that purpose I was searching for. Every day helps me to understand more about myself and my experiences. I’m grateful to Waythrough for that."
