Is this not standard mum life? 🤣🤣
Went to make the beds, but couldn't find the right things. Stropped and emptied the cupboard and then had to reorganise and sort. I'm an hour into this little side quest (had to reorganised the underbed storage when I got duvets and pillows out) and now I'm posting on insta instead of cracking on with the important things like hoovering and subduing the chaos of the summer holidays.

Not only does this photo show different ducts at the ni**le (milk doesn't come from just one hole), but it shows that not all ducts release the same content at the same time.

Interestingly, this image was taken during the antenatal period — it’s the very first attempt at hand expressing colostrum. You can see the rich yellow beginning to emerge at the top: that’s colostrum, often called liquid gold for its dense, nutrient-rich composition.

So why express before your baby arrives? Studies show that simply becoming familiar with hand expressing — even if you never see a drop (and if you don’t, it absolutely doesn’t mean you’ll struggle to produce milk later!) — can lead to better breastfeeding initiation and a longer duration overall.

Antenatal expressing may also be recommended if you have diabetes, PCOS, or a planned cesarean, among other reasons.

If you’d like to explore this option gently and confidently, my £35 WhatsApp service includes plenty of info, videos, and support to help you get started.

Beastfeeding hasn't changed for millenia, but we have.

Breastfeeding today comes with a tangle of modern challenges - less hands-on support, more conflicting advice, a vastly different idea of breastfeeding education, and a culture that often expects instant perfection.

Let me ask this...
Of the people you might have spoken to about breastfeeding, how many have had straightforward, uncomplicated feeding journeys?
It’s not a long list for most of us - and that says a lot.
Because if breastfeeding had always been this difficult, how could we have survived, let alone thrived, as a species?

So what do I offer?

Well, for expectant parents, I offer education grounded in biological norms - what babies are naturally wired to expect, and how we can support those needs with gentle, practical skills. It's an approach that differs from many conventional classes, which often teach techniques that don’t quite align with how babies instinctively feed and behave.

For those already in the thick of it, I provide ongoing, evidence-based support that is both practical and non-judgmental. Whether in-home, overnight, or virtual, I offer calm reassurance.

Most importantly, I offer the gift of continuity.

I'm excited to be having a chat with this evening.
We will be exploring colic and reflux from an infant feeding perspective and looking at effective ways to subdue, or even prevent, symptoms for happier more settled babies.

Infant feeding is incredibly nuanced.
It’s no longer the simple biological norm it used to be, and there are so many reasons why — too many to go into in this post.

This is why, in order to even sit the exam to become an IBCLC, you must accumulate 1,000 clinical hours, complete 14 health science subjects, and undertake 90 hours of lactation-specific education. It’s not a simple two-day course (although I’ve done plenty of those too!).

Anyway, getting to the point...

If you're experiencing challenges with your baby, it's likely they link back to infant feeding — even if feeding seems to be going well. (This is especially true under four months of age.)

For instance, I don’t offer sleep training or sleep support, but feeding can impact early sleep patterns in ways that have longer-term implications.
We’re often told that breastfed babies feed more frequently — and they do — but if your breastfed (or bottle-fed!) baby is looking to feed every hour of the day, or most hours of the day, it’s likely they’re rarely sleeping more than one 45-minute sleep cycle at a time. If they don’t learn to link sleep cycles early on, this can lead to sleep challenges and unsettled babies.

So we’d look at why your baby might be struggling to stay asleep.
Sometimes it’s hunger, or aerophagia (swallowing air). Sometimes there’s so much milk that the fat content is altered, or they’re feeding very quickly and not realising when they’re full.
Sometimes it’s more to do with discomfort — which can be caused by sensitivities, gut motility, tension in their little bodies, or even something simple like missed cues.

See what I mean about nuanced?

And that’s not to say that babies who don’t sleep well early on will never sleep well! But in my experience, it makes life easier to explore these issues as early as possible.

My £35 WhatsApp service is a great way to look through things methodically, with the lovely continuity of always speaking with just me.

If I can help, please don’t hesitate to get in touch!
Kx

On a very windy day 10 years ago, this patient (and I mean PATIENT 🤣) man met me at the end of the isle. It's hard to express how lucky I am, to have a husband who accepts me exactly as I am.
13 years, 2 houses in 2 counties, and our wonderful son. The adventure continues!

Promoting and supporting breastfeeding is a vital part of my role, and this week, over 120 countries come together to celebrate it. It’s encouraging to see global media giving it some of the attention it rightly deserves.

However, this week can also be difficult for the many women who were unable to breastfeed, or who couldn’t continue for as long as they had hoped.

I hear countless stories from women who feel deep sadness about their feeding journey. What’s most disheartening is that many feel that it was a personal failure on their part - when, in truth, it is they who were failed by the system. Often more than once.

It is not enough to simply promote the well-established benefits of breastfeeding. We must ensure that robust, accessible support systems are in place. Increasing initiation rates is a positive step, but without addressing the gaps in ongoing support, we will continue to let mothers down, and our continuing breastfeeding rates at six months and beyond will remain unacceptably low.

In the UK, breastfeeding peer supporters are the backbone of community support.

So, for World Breastfeeding Week 2025, I’d like to extend an offer to peer supporters in Cornwall: if you would value a free one-hour breastfeeding education session with an IBCLC, focused on practical support skills, please do get in touch.
