A SMARTER goal model can be applied to pretty much everything!
World Book Day. That daunting moment when you read in the newsletter âchildren can come dressed as their favourite book character, home made is bestâ.
Well, I love books and embracing imagination, so why is my heart sinking?
Probably because it will require me to step out of my comfort zone. i.e. Iâm going to have to manage some expectations (my own as well as the kids), and take time out of my schedule to find a costume that fits within my managed expectation whilst avoiding Amazon Prime which would make it so easy, well easy for me but not for the planet.
So SMARTER goals and how I used the model to overcome this dilemma.
We got SPECIFIC. This focuses the mind. Kids opted for W***y Wonka & Oompa Loompa
How were we going to MEASURE the success of the costume? For this we had to imagine the outcome and ask, âwhat do we need to ensure people know youâre W***y Wonka and youâre an Oompa Loompaâ? Hat, cane, green trousers, purple jacket, orange skin, green hair, white outfit (it is world book dayâŚnot world film day, but the kids have opted for the film version imagesâŚmanaging expectations). Plus, the outfits have to be sourced from home.
REALITY check time. Is this ACHIEVABLE? Iâll be honest, we winged it a bit with this one. The risk factor of not quite getting it right was low so we went with our intuition that saidâ we can do thisâ, and with a bit of Wonka magic / trust in our intuition we did it. We found an old purple shirt and a cane at mum and dadâs place, we had green and white pairs of trousers that had come in bags of hand me downs from friends and family. I got creative and made a hat from some brown card. Our orange face paint was out so we did have to buy that (there will be tiger face painting being done at the next party!) and we also bought green hairspray, to avoid buying a wig. It was a compromise and bending of the rules but green hair was key to the outfit.
Having a TIME limit is key to maintaining momentum and focus. Thursday 7th March was the deadline. School meals were ordered so time normally used for packed lunches was spent applying hairspray and face paint.
If a goal is EXCITING for you, you stand a much better chance of achieving it. It was the excitement that was the driving force of this achievement. If the kids didnât want to go to school dressed up then we wouldnât have bothered, but they did and they were excited about the prospect.
When committing time and energy to achieving something, it needs to be RELEVANT to our lives. Only you can decide what is and isnât relevant to you and your life. It may require some thoughts and reflections though.
Wishing you all a day filled with imagination, inspired by books or otherwise!
