A new leg and big goals ahead for Sophie 🚣‍♀️

Sophie has been with us at Dorset Orthopaedic for over 10 years and continues to push boundaries in both coastal and indoor adaptive rowing. As Captain of Mayflower Offshore Rowing Club, she not only competes at a high level but also plays a key role in supporting and encouraging her team, training and racing alongside non-adaptive rowers.

With upcoming competitions including the Irish Masters Championships and South Coast League, Sophie’s new rowing leg has been designed to improve comfort and fit, helping her perform at her best. And staying true to her style, she’s chosen an eye-catching fish-themed design 🐟 We’re excited to see how she gets on over the coming months.

As part of MS Awareness Week, we’re sharing Scott’s story.

Scott has always been active, running marathons, swimming competitively and cycling long distances. But in 1996, during the Reading Half Marathon, he began to notice small changes in his coordination. At just 30 years old, he was diagnosed with Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis.

As his MS progressed, Scott adapted to keep moving, but drop foot gradually began to affect his balance and confidence. In 2015, after an assessment with Kim Pickering, Lead Orthotist at our Ringwood Clinic, he was fitted with a SAFO.

The difference was immediate:
“When I put it on, it felt transformative. I could do heel and toe walking for the first time in fourteen years. My balance changed completely, it felt like being vertical again.”

Now using his fifth SAFO, Scott continues to work closely with Kim to stay active and pursue new goals. With renewed stability, he’s completed Land’s End to John O’Groats by bike, regularly rides long distances, and is already preparing for his next challenge, a ride around the Isle of Wight this summer.

Scott’s journey is a great example of how the right orthotic support can help people living with MS stay active, independent, and moving forward.

As an emerging amateur boxer, Ollie’s life changed during a routine training session when he fractured his lower limb. Further investigations revealed a very rare type of bone cancer, and just before his 16th birthday, he underwent an above-knee amputation.

Ollie committed fully to his rehabilitation and was fitted with an Ottobock C-Leg 4 through the NHS. This supported him in regaining his independence, returning to boxing, and getting back to many of the things he enjoyed before.

However Ollie had set his sights on the Genium X4. With the support of family, friends and the boxing community, he raised the funds and approached Dorset Orthopaedic.

His goal was to be fitted with his X4 in time for his 18th birthday, and we were delighted to help him achieve it.

Today is World Parkinson’s Day, raising awareness of Parkinson’s and the impact it can have on movement, mobility and everyday independence. It’s a reminder of the importance of early diagnosis, ongoing support, and the vital role of caregivers.

At Dorset Orthopaedic, we understand how the right orthotic support can make a real difference. Our clinicians work closely with each person to improve stability, mobility and confidence, helping them stay independent and keep doing what matters most.

Natalie from our Amersham Clinic recently had the incredible opportunity to travel to Cortina to support her patient, Luke Tarrant, while he was in Italy the Winter Paralympics 🇮🇹

While there, Natalie fitted Luke with the new Salomon Ski Foot, helping him get back on the slopes with confidence. Watching Luke ski, just his second time back since his amputation, was truly incredible to see.

We love rehabilitation that goes beyond the clinic, and supporting our patients as they return to the activities they love 💙

Huge congratulations to Colin Edwards for completing The Grizzly with Axe Valley Runners! 🦿

The Grizzly is no ordinary run – a 20-mile off-road challenge that takes runners across beaches and along a mix of roads, trails and muddy tracks. Colin took it all in his stride, finishing 3 minutes faster than last year.

An impressive achievement on such a tough course, well done, Colin! 👏💙

Wishing the very best of luck to Colin Edwards as he takes on The Grizzly with Axe Valley Runners this Sunday! 🦿From all...
